I took the week off and might take the kids to see it if it's not to intense for a 9 year boy and an 11 year old girl. Any reviews here?

Perfect audience.

Within the Hollywood medium "movies" not "films" it's perfect.

:)

My folks saw it an encouraged me to see it. Sci Fi is not thier cup of tea at all but apparently the computer effects were just astounding.

Saw it in 3D this weekend. I loved it. I liked it so much I may go back with friends next weekend. The graphics are astounding, and in 3D it made you feel like you were flying with all the flying machines and creatures. I give it two thumbs up.

I saw it, and although I loved the movie, I was totally turned off by the - what I took as - highly politicized message. Did anyone notice that? "Shock and Awe"? It was beyond blatant as far as I was concerned.

It *is* Hollywood, after all.

Saw it a couple of days ago in 3D. Stunning effects to be sure. Pretty high on the wow factor.

Just got back from seeing it tonight with my Son. He wanted 3D so that's what we saw. After seeing it, I can't imagine it not in 3D. It really is a good movie with awesome special effects.

It was a good way to kill a few hours and the CGI was impressive, but the plot is rather old and shallow.

True, the plot isn't too deep. Basically Alien meets Dances With Wolves, or perhaps Terminator meets Ferngully...

But in terms of movie entertainment it's a landmark piece of work like 2001 A Space Odyssey or Wizard of Oz. Not saying it's as good as those films but it's one that will define a new era of movie entertainment.

As a pilot I noticed that the aviation related things like radio chatter, cockpit displays, flying machines were actually not too stupid.

Not sure I'd take kids of that age to see it. Lots of fairly graphic violence and some damn scary monsters.

Notice that all but 1 comment is about the CGI and not the story, the characters, the plot....

Go see it for the CGI, and don't expect much in the way of the story.

I have this dialog (with action) in my head...Sigourney Weaver has just finished reading the script and is meeting with Jim Cameron, looking at the sketches for everything...."Jim, you are NOT getting me into one of those things again!!!!"

(see the movie, you'll understand)

I saw it a few days ago and while it does have great effects and CGI the plot is lacking somewhat. It is also rather long to just sit through. I would most likely not take children of that age to see it due to the language, violence, and as said some graphic creatures that could give younger children nightmares. I enjoyed it though in 3D , best way to see it.

Well, we loved it, and are actually contemplating seeing it again! IMAX 3D was definitely worth it. We agree that the plot line was somewhat simplistic, but we didn't feel bored, or think that the movie was too long. After a little while we stopped noticing what was CGI vs live action.

CG ain't my thing. Won't be seeing it.

I particularly liked the homage to fighter pilots after the 'first flight':

A wristwatch-shooting debrief by the blue big blue kitty cats. :D

The battle scenes were intense I suppose but probably something a 9 yr old boy would love. :) I really enjoyed myself. It's a long movie but I felt like it moved quick, which is a sign to me that I was having a good time :) I saw it in 3-D which really made the flying scenes come alive. It really felt like I was there so much that I reacted instinctively to the height and flying action. When the character was approaching a sheer cliff and looked over I really felt like I wanted to back away quick! The 3-D effects were not over-the-top and for the most part added realism to the movie instead of in-your-face effects (of which there were some).

As far as the story is concerning, the first 50-60% of the movie is moving and compelling as the story unfolds. But once it unfolds, the remaining plot of the movie is pretty obvious and formulaic. It's still fun, but you kinda know what's about to happen and how it's going to end. The bad guys tended to be flat characters but the protagonist did show character development, though you can probably predict the conflicts he will experience in the latter half of the movie and how he will resolve them.

A very fun movie, do see it in 3-D on the big screen before it's too late.

Jstro, I know what you mean about wanting to back away from the edge! And I agree about the use of 3D. It was supportive, rather than overwhelming.

I liked the scene when the pilot loses instruments and says "we're now VFR now."

I noted that their aircraft were modeled after helicopters, and they had the pilot in the right seat. They also named the runways by letters instead of numeric directions, but I suspect that may have been intentional.

BTW, welcome to POA! Nice to see another from the area here!

The whole premise of why we were squatting on an alien planet was to mine a rare and valuable mineral which the script writers named "unobtainium". That pretty much tells you all you need to know about the pen quality. That said, the effects were great (and I want one of those helicopters....)

This one was done so well that you'd have a hard time believing it was CG if the characters, flora and animals weren't so alien. I've seen it twice (went back for the 3D version) and enjoyed it both times. I was concerned that the 3D would be overwhelming but fortunately it wasn't and actually made the experience better.

Agreed....we saw it in 3D. The new 3D Cameron used was amazing.

Yes the plot is a bit cliche and the overtones heavy-handed. With that said...it was one hell of a movie, one of the best I have seen in a long time.

$430MM to make this movie. Simply nuts.

Jessie and I are hoping to see it this weekend in 3D.

Cheers,

Check out

for the history of the element. Goes back to the 1950s and has been used in a number of SF films.

I guess I am weird, I actually enjoyed Waterworld! :p
