Anybody know anything about mini-splits? [NA]

I would do (2) 9K units in the bedrooms and (1) 18 K for the larger open area. They will run/cycle as required. If they are too small they'll run constantly. You could always turn a unit off and leave a door open....but if they're too small you're stuck. I have an 18K in my wife's she shed 10x24 (it's well insulated). It's a little big and I might swap it out for a 9K but it doesn't short cycle....like I'd expect.

Also, make sure you're looking at least 23 SEER so that they provide heat at -5F.

So I got an hvac contractor out to give me a quote. Looks like I'm going to wind up with a carrier branded heat pump. $5000 installed, after Ameren kicks in $1000. Also supposed to eligible for a $2000 federal tax rebate. That gets it real close to the the ~$3000 Chinese units I was looking at, although some of those presumably would be eligible for tax credits if you found the right hoops to jump through. For that money I'm not going to even consider doing it myself.

They're offering 0% financing, but only for 18 months. I generally ALWAYS will jump at 0% (even when I could borrow money for 2.5%), but not sure it's worth filling out the app and dealing with setting up auto payments and dealing with closing the account. OTOH, I could invest the cash, but I'm not sure the market would beat the 7% I'm borrowing operating money for these days.

They also said they'd take a credit card, so there's 2% back, which with the "cash" discount, cancels out the interest savings. Wonder if I could talk them into 4% if I just write a check.
