Was thinking about making a trek down to RYY (McCollum Field) soon. Wondering if anyone has any PIREPS on it as far as getting in and out, and parking (ramp fees etc.) It's class D right under the ATL class B airspace, any info is appreciated.

Thanks a bunch!

The Bravo isn't a problem at all coming from the north. Nice little airport. Not sure about fees. I'm on the other side of the city and have been over there on a few occasions to have lunch at the Elevation Chophouse. Someone recently told me they want a ramp fee to eat in the restaurant now, do not if it is true. You used to be able to walk to the restaurant without going through the FBO but they closed the pathway off. Enjoy the flight.

Great, sounds good, thanks for the feedback

I go down there several times a year, park unassisted on the NW ramp (west of the chophouse) and have not seen evidence of ramp fees. Also, I spoke with a couple of guys who'd eaten at the chophouse a couple of weeks ago. They didn't get hit up for a ramp fee.

Thanks Kyle. Don't remember who told me they were getting hit up. Been over a year since I flew in there.

I'm actually convinced that it FAA policy that there is a rock quarry within 5nm of every airport. :D

It sure seems that way, doesn't it? Apparently I've driven by some my entire life and never knew.

There used to be two FBO's, one on the north side, one on the south. The North side one bought out the south side and then closed it. Then that company sold out to Hawthorne. I can see where if you find a spot west of the restaurant they might not bother you but if you pull up front, they might hit you for a fee.

Ill keep that in mind, was planning to just do a xc down there (100$ hamburger style) and park somewhere and try to get a crew car to hit up barrett parkway and grab a bite to eat. I've seen it off the road before but never flown to it. Sure appreciate the info, thanks!

Kyle, you gonna come to a breakfast sometime?

Yep. Just trying to find a Saturday morning when I have both the time and decent weather. This Winter has been tough on both counts.

The food Randy is talking about is EAA690's monthly breakfast. They do a really good job with those and usually have an excellent speaker and a turnout to match.

I'm based there but I don't know how they handle ramp fees. We just pay them almost .5amu every month and we get a place to park our Dakota next to a citation.

They do have a couple cars so if you buy gas, waaayyy over priced, and grab the car there are many food choices nearby.

When are you thinking of coming down? If I'm home I would be interested in meeting someone more area pilots.

Wait you pay $500/month for a tie down or a hangar?

I'm going to assume the Citation is not parked at a tie-down if that helps ;)

Anyway, I used to fly out of RYY 2009-2010 when I was training and enjoyed it. However, the recent AirNav reviews suggest the new FBO (Hawthorne) is really trying to ruin it. There's at least eight complaints about $25 ramp fees and $5 security fees even when filling up or visiting the restaurant since November. That's a real shame when there used to be two decent FBOs here.

In April we have Paul Morel of Social Flight coming to talk to us. Maybe the weather will be decent.

Gonna have a Poker Run in May in lieu of a program, details to follow.

Getting in and out is a non issue - but many times I do not get bravo clearance if I go vfr but its pretty easy to get under the shelf if needed. Radio traffic is brutal sometimes.. Personally I'd go IFR.... easier.

Restaurant there is really good - and i've never paid a fee

Since your profile says Tennessee you'll have zero issues coming in from the north. You can certainly call up approach on your way in (or bring flight following), but RYY is under a 7000' Bravo shelf. Even from the east or west it's still 5000' coming in. Be aware of where it is, but a lot of folks don't even fly over 7000' anyway.

It's almost 500, I think about 460 or 470 after the last increase.

There's us and an older CJ in a shared hanger. Rent and the high gas price sucks but it's convienient for me and my partners. Plus all the local airports don't have any hanger space.
