I just called ANYAWOS this morning to find the ceiling @KOLM the announcement said as of Feb 6, 2006 ANYAWOS is going all subscription and directed you to their site. http://www.anyawos.com/SubscriptionOnly.html

It sounds as if they just couldn't raise enough capital through advertisements. A real shame. It easy and fast way to get conditions at any field. Looks like the new subscription only will probably be their current premium service for $5.95 per month.

So would you subscribe now that its subscription only?

no. only because the numbers are easy enough to find in the little green book.

For the Money, I like PilotMyCast for Cellphones. Get the 4.1.1 version, its like having a briefer in your hand, and it does'nt take 5 minutes for it to answer the phone.

I still use the AnyAwos Beta service number they supposedly said was discontinued, which it is not.

I keep the local airports programmed and speed-dialed into my cell-phone, so I only use it for the fun of hearing an AWOS somewhere else. If worst comes to worst, I'll call Flight Service for the weather, it just takes a few extra minutes longer.

1) Dean where can I get info on PilotMyCast?

2) Jason if you can get a briefer in just a few minutes more than ANYAWOS can deliver then you aren't calling 1 800 WX-BRIEF! I want your inside line. Come on cough it up;)

Haha, no inside land-line for FSS....but here is the ANY AWOS Beta number: 877-213-9947. I think it will still require a subscription come Feb, but not sure. I have so many pilot friends in my cell phone that I can call...and have them pull up METARS/TAFS/PIREPS from ADDS in under 30 seconds. If anyone wants that service, PM me for Jason's Flight Service [hehe, unofficial of course] my number. I'm in front of the computer a lot. J/k...but really...in the future there will be so many ways to get the same information, it will really be a struggle to NOT get it.

You can also text message: wx@flightaware.com and in your subject line, include the airports you want METARS/TAFs for. It will send a reply message within a minute or two with the requested METARS/TAFs in textual form.

This is how I got it. I have Cingular wireless, on my Cellphone (Razr) I went to media, then weather, clicked on pilot my cast, clicked downoload. One thing I will advise is to have a phone with a good screen and as lagre as you can get.

For me.. It's usally instant. I press 1 and there is the briefer. Princeton seems to be pretty decent.

When I was in Iowa it wasn't this way with Fort Dodge there was a wait fo a minute or two.

I've been getting Williamsport FSS right away after I press 1 during the "international precaution" announcement.

FSS service has definately improved, or fewer folks are flying.

That's my experience as well -- it's a vast improvement over the old days -- I usually get a briefer within 30 seconds at Williamsport. A number of the briefers there are pilots as well...

I've used Any AWOS due to convience. If they are going to subscription only, I will go to the AFD.

I have used anyawos simply for convenience. Never got a busy signal on routed calls but did have to suffer through lists of 6 or 8 airports. As to the commercials, they never really bothered me. They are on TV and radio and I can usually tune them out.
What I've done in the past, is to program the AWOS/ASOS or ATIS into my phone for the destination airports for the next flight. If I need more space, I can always delete stagnant numbers.
Nah. Not likely to pay ANOTHER subscription. No. Don't think so.

I call direct if I have Flight Guide or AF/D handy. I probably used Anywhere AWOS half a dozen times for that convienence.

The Seattle FSS always answers quickly, so don't really need it but if I was having the long wait times as others have mentioned, then it would be attractive.

I'm with you guys. I have every ATIS/AWOS in the state of Louisiana saved in my cell phone as well as all the major airports that I fly in and out of. I no longer use ANYAWOS because the wait is too long and I don't plan to pay for something that I can get for free. Forgetaboutit:no:

Wow - I've never seen a poll before with such a resounding answer. Absolutely no one thinks they'd pay for it.

Makes you wonder what sort of market study the people at AnyAWOS did prior to making the decision to run it into a pay service? My guess is none.

If it not making any cash with adverts, and your market study shows no one will pay for it, it is time to change how it is run. Possibly eliminating it altogether.

It is indeed getting easier to obtain AWOS info and reports. You can now get METARs sent to your phone via Twitter (ICAO station ID + 'awos'), dedicated mobile sites like m.airportview.net, and numerous full-service web sites.

Yes, I am biased because I wrote the code to deliver all those services. But I still think they have value, and they are all free (ad-sponsored).
