What is the best indication that new rings have seated in an A65 Continental? Stable oil consumption? A peak, then drop in oil temp? Both?
 
OK. My Google-fu says it's when oil consumption stabilizes. But full break-in may take 50 to 100 hours.

Both,, If it ran hot to start with.
 
if it runs without too much black on inside of each of the exhaust stacks should be a nice grey and not much.not alot of breather oil drip after shut down.it should make the rpm as stated for the prop. pulling it through each cylinder should feel alike. not alot of of oil use but what does that really mean besides you might be over filling it {try to find a sweet spot and etch the stick} is it the correct stick for the tank? correct tank for the engine? in most cases the cylinders are 40 to 70 years old and are straight bored and you will use oil. also dose it run smooth at cruse if so thats a great indication as it sucking almost the same/ equil fuel into all the cylinders and exploding with the same force . leekdown compression testing might be low on the list in determining the health of smallbore continentals.

Stick is miscalibrated. It shows 3.5 quarts when there's four inside. Etching is a good idea. I'll do that at the next oil change.

tail down should make the the oil level in the rear of the engine higher. but with the C-series engines that will not be much in the little kidney sump.
