Android Aviation Apps?

Now that I'm flying again, I'm looking for some good Android Aviation Apps. So far, I have found that WingX is good, but pricy ($99 is pretty retarded for a phone app).

I downloaded one called "Journey Tracker" that is not specifically an Aviation App, but allows you to save GPS tracks for upload and review later in Google Earth. I tried it out driving around, and it seems to work pretty good. Will try next time I fly.

Any other suggestions? I'd like something that will do moving map over a sectional or L-chart, but I haven't yet found anything. ForeFlight is still working on their Android app, so that's not available yet.

I don't have it but people rave about it, ForeFlight ($9.99)

Keep in mind that ForeFlight for Android is nowhere near the same product or as good as Foreflight for the iPhone.
 
AirWx hasn't been mentioned yet. I like it; can view charts, and I love the "Call AWOS" button on the Settings menu when viewing a particular airport.

I have it, and totally agree; it's only weather (even named such: ForeFlight Weather), no flight planning. I find AirWx does a better job of the weather. I'm hoping ForeFlight eventually extends to the Android version the features they have on the iPhone.

Do you know what the deltas are?

Info like that would be valuable, I had not even looked to see if they were any different. My assumption was that they were the same just based on the name alone.

They are significantly different. Foreflight web site lays out a lot of the differences, but the biggest delta is this: for the android: it's pretty much just weather... for the iPhone/iPad it includes weather, flight planning, charts, and GPS (and more).

The only problem I have with the AWOS button is that it doesn't seem to have one for anywhere that doesn't have a METAR...if it had a METAR, I wouldn't need the AWOS most of the time :incazzato:
 
How does ForFlight work on the small display of the iPhone. I've played with it a bit on an iPad and I liked it.

I've been working with the public FAA databases and the digital charts that it takes to do that kind of thing but I'm unsure about something as small as my Droid.

That Cisco Android Tablet with USB devices, that somebody posted, on the other hand sounds like a good way to suck up my free time.

Aviation Weather (as others have noted) it does NOTAMs too!

I use the Documents to Go PDF browser for looking at plates, but don't plan to use it as an EFB!
Google Listen for keeping up with the aviation podcasts
I use the browser for a lot, as it's quite functional.

There are a lot more apps out there than last time I looked. The IntelliPilot logbook and E6Bs are all relatively recent.

Leslie loves Pilot MyCast from Garmin. $130 for an app though is a tad steep. OTOH, I think she pays $10/month for it :hairraise:

I've sent a note to ForeFlight requesting a Droid version. More voices can only help. ForeFlight Weather is, as has been noted, a much restricted product.

I'll second AirWx. Best $4.99 I've spent for my Droid. A really good app. Really cuts down on the number of times I log onto Duats.

WingX - not so much. I forked over the $99 because it had moving maps. Oops. Not on the Droid it doesn't. Don't waste your money. Rumor has it that the $99 is an annual subscription. I can't confirm that, but if it is, I won't be renewing. Fool me once...
 
Check out 'Bearing and Distance"

This is a basic GPS navigation app for only $5 (per US section). Just like the name says, it gives bearing an distance to an airport, VOR, waypoint, etc. Useful for an aircraft without DME or as a backup. It will also show the nearest airports.
 
I've used "Bearing + Distance" too and for 5 bucks you absolutely can't go wrong. There are several versions that are synced to the same geography covered in the various editions of the A/FD. I downloaded the NE version (I'm in NJ) and found it to be be extremely accurate. You just choose your destination from a huge selection of airports, VOR's and waypoints and you then see your distance and bearing to your selected destination in text form. There is also another compass screen that points in the direction you should be heading.

There's a "Lite" version that you can download for free that appears to geared to the geography of the Washington DC area, I guess the location of the developer.

This app is highly recommended.

Is it a real app? Who is it developed by? Does it contain the features the above poster indicates? I don't have a Droid phone and for some stupid reason the public google market site doesn't let you search for an app.

I think some of these '1 post' people are coming on here just trying to spam their app. This is not the right place for that. Please using the classifieds section and represent yourself honestly. Any dishonest advertising will be considered spam and the post and your account will be deleted.

Android Flight Director is a developer, not an app, it appears. There are quite a few apps in the market under that developer. Not many ratings/comments though, and I am not going to buy them because I'm not looking at the moment, so its hard to say.

It appears legit. This post also appears to be spam....but, it was solicited spam, so...is it spam?

  • N-number lookup 2.99
No developer web page but email is androidflightdirector at gmail. I looked at a few of the apps and none had comments.

I suspect this is an ad just because it smells like one but I have no proof.

It's a really fine line...and I'm not sure we've drawn it.

Personally I have no problems with a developer talking about an application they've written in appropriate threads, like this one, or in classifieds. It really rubs me the wrong way though when someone pretends to be a "user" of their application instead of just saying they wrote it and it does X Y and Z.

I agree. I have no problem with a developer responding on this thread about their application, saying that they've got an Android aviation app out there. That's useful information! But if a developer masquerades as a user (and I don't know that any of the posters on this thread have done so), that's disingenuous, at best.

You know what would be a cool app...

Take a picture of your instrument panel and have it spit out all your E6B data...after "reading" the DG and the altimeter.

My little Garmin GPS96C calculates all the stuff, but I have to enter my heading and altitude, would be cool if an app could actually read the data off a picture!:cornut:

I know - But that's what Nick et al seem to have been saying in the past about why Android is "better" than the iPhone.

Neither is better for everyone - They're just different.

IMHO the Apple AppStore is currently still better organized and a bit more user friendly than the Android Market. Not talking of any content here, but the usability. I think a large part of that is that the AppStore is closely integrated with iTunes and people are familiar with that interface. The Android Market is a little clunkier to buy things and I think that the search feature is 'hidden' in that it is not as easy to see as the one on the AppStore.

Also the iconography of the market makes it look a little too much like the messaging function in the AndroidOS.

"Fanboy Kent" never existed - When I suggest a particular phone, device, etc. for somebody, I sincerely believe it to be the best choice for them. Unless I'm messing with you guys on here, in which case you'll see ;)'s. I will play "fanboy" for your amusement sometimes. ;) :yes:

Frankly, Apple's app store could use some improvement too - It seems like Search is the only way to find anything. I guess that's partly because they have well over 200,000 apps now (in fact, I think I heard this past week that they'd hit 250,000) so it'd be hard to organize them all. But they could make other improvements too, like the ability to organize results by the average user rating and that sort of thing.

FIY, I posted about the Bearing and Distance app and I am just a user, not associated in any way with the developer. However, I do work for Motorola and have a Droid.

I figured out a long time ago that it was better to have a job that pays you enough to let you fly for fun vs trying to get a job in aviation that lets you fly for free, but doesn't pay you enough to live.
 
I think we need to know how all these apps survive the move from Droid to Galaxy Tab. In traditional desktop computing, corresponding increases in screen resolution often screwed with UI badly. Secondly, I'd like to know how well they work when the device is disconnected. If it tries to load a map segment in flight, app is disqualified for me.
 
Guys! You've got to look at Fltplan.com mobile. They have weather, flight tracking, charts and all the normal filing a flight plan info. It was released in Dec. I can down load approach charts and they will come up when I don't have a connection in pds. or gif format. Saved me on a recent trip when I saw I had to divert for weather and make an unplanned stop in Louisiana. Didn't have charts for there; so, I downloaded several and used them to make a stop. Good stuff!!

Concur....100%. If they could add sectionals somehow, this app would be the best I've seen. Or flight planning.
 
Nick: if you file alight plan, the route charts and sections are shown on the second page. I've never tried saving them to view while flying though.

I have foreflight on my Ipad and love it..only thing it's missing is terrain..downside to Ipad is that it takes up too much real estate..would like to have something the size of xoom. Can you tell me what features that foreflight for xoom has? thank you. John
