OMG they fly too! I want one soooo bad but they shed. I know they have a related breed (same markings) that has shorter hair.

They love to fly! They even have their own headphones. And the Swiss Mountain Dog is the related breed I think you're thinking of... but I was talking with someone who had one just a few weeks ago, and she said they are really dense and not nearly as smart or laid back as the Berners. [She has one of each.] Totally different personality types, they're pretty hyper and more like a lab.

My border collie enjoys flying

This one became famous when a female's male roomies would not put the seat down. They trained her BMD to put the seat down:

OTOH, almost every house now has a ****shoe or whatever they call them. Most of them are dumber than a rock.

I was quite surprised shi-tzus weren't higher on the list. I have two, and they are indeed dumb as rocks. Thing is, rocks would make good pets it they could look up at you with those big saucer eyes like my dogs can. I didn't get dogs so they could be rocket scientists, I got dogs to be my pets. And I love my shi-tzus.

I've had 4 Golden Retrievers in my life over the years. Sweetest dogs known. Not too bright, but sweet and loveable. The first, when I was young, was a washout from the guidedogs for the blind program in California. Overweight and spoiled rotten when we got her. Had hip displaysia, which wasn't helped by the extra weight. Mom and Dad put her on a diet and took her for long walks to get the weight down. Oh, and she wasn't allowed to sleep on (not at, on) the foot of their bed as she had been used to. She got over it and felt much better when the weight came off. Now, you'd think a Golden would be a good hunting dog. With this one, you'd be wrong. She had no idea what a bird was and was gun-shy to boot. Dig out the shotguns and she was at the door, ready to go. Take her out in the field and she was happy to go. But, no nose. Stepped on a pheasant and flushed it. It scared her as she had no idea it was there. And, then if you forgot where you parked the car all you had to do was fire a gun in the air and follow the dog. It was no longer fun and she was headed for the car at full tilt boogie. We won't get into what she did around the house during thungerstorms. Fortunately Dad was a veterinarian and had access to the tranquelizers it took to calm her down. :D And, a walking garbage can. There wasn't anything that dog didn't try to eat during her life.

Next Golden was much better. Mom and Dad got him as a puppy. First time my wife and I took him out bird hunting (no training) I knocked down a hungarian partridge. The dog looked around like "what was that?" I brought him to the bird. He nosed it and it jumped as I had only winged it. He grabbed it in mid-air. I took it from him, praised him highly and he spent the rest of the day trying to take it back. It was his bird. The next day I knocked down a pheasant and didn't have to say a word. He heard the shot, saw the bird fall and was off like a shot. "I know this game!" And an absolute sweety. You could trust him around any kid of any age.

We had a couple ourselves over the years. Great family pets. And I miss having one around.

What don't I miss about Goldens in the house? They SHED! All the time. All year. It's amazing how much less often I have to empty the central vacuum system with the last one gone.

My pal's goldens ate his house and drilled for oil in the back yard. And shed everywhere. Wonderfully lovable dogs though.

A Belgian Malinois will outsmart most owners. They need a job to do, or they will be destructive.

I really wanted one of those....but I knew better.

I'm just having fun keeping up with my rescue Aussie. :yesnod:

My German Shepherds.
The first two passed away a few years ago.
I still have the third one. I've taken her flying with me a few times, but the place I rent from now doesn't allow animals in the airplanes.

It's fun to see everyone's dogs. :)

Quote from this video: While the humans' names remain a secret, it is widely believed that the dog who helped in the Bin Laden case was a Belgian Malinois.

Yes I know the military are using more Malinois than German Shepherds. Mals are a bit smaller and lighter, thus easier to carry, and I know German Shepherds do not like heat. Sadly, I would not be surprised if they lost a few German Shepherds to heat stroke in Iraq/Afghanistan.

I love Shepherds. Great looking dogs.

I had a German Shorthaired Pointer for 15 years. He was a great dog. I did hunt with him a bit, he was a natural pointer, retreiver. He loved to walk in the woods or anywhere wide open where I could take him off the leash. He always kept me in sight, and would stay maybe 30 - 40 yards ahead when we'd hunt, and look back at me and stop so I could catch up. I miss him. :(

Beautiful dogs. German Shepherds look like they mean business. My chocolate lab, on the otherhand, does not. He's a lover, not a fighter.

He's also named after my favorite beverage.

Another dark colored dog named Guinness! I love that name for dogs. My dog is Cyrus. My BF's dog is "Buddy" - very unoriginal but very fitting, he is my true buddy.

American Bulldog.

They may shed but it just adds slightly to the dust.

They love Daddy and each other - although the second part is supposed to be a secret.

I gotta make a video of two really good dogs at dinner time.

Answer me this: have you ever personally owned a Corgi?

Yes, and I love him. Yes they bark and shed, and they're always hungry, but they have an attitude which I like. They're their own dog, not some slobbering thing trying to suck up to you all the time. That said, I know all other dogs aren't that way, and there are many other breeds I like.

Their independence can be a blessing, whereas velcro dogs are super needy, but I'm at a point in my life where I'd rather have a "dumber" dog who I don't have to worry about around children and other dogs than a "dog with an attitude" who has actually bitten (when people play fight with me or when I roller skate or swing). I realize these are nips and don't break the skin but I'm just over it.

We've got a few, a lab mix, and a greyhound. Love em both to death.

We are also fostering a 90+lb grey now. Despite out best efforts were falling for him fast and if he doesn't find a home soon he wont need to.

And then weekends we get Angies moms rotty/lab mix too.

If Jack finds a home we are planning on tracking down a Dane next.

I've always wanted a Dane just because they are so large, but I hate the short lifespan and expense in terms of food etc.

I'd like to get an Irish Wolfhound.

A friend of mine has Danes. Cool dogs, but also number 1 for stomach bloat/torsion. Dane owners should have the dog's stomach gastropexied as a preventive measure. My friend's last Dane died of bloat at 7 or 8 years old.

Irish Wolfhounds have a high rate of osteosarcoma (bone cancer).

One nice thing about the greys, quite healthy being bred for making money

If "smart" was my only wish, I'd want:

Burmese Mountain Dog (Burmers?)

As a former and future owner of a Berner (They are Bernese Mountain Dogs-- Named after Berne, Switzerland, not Burma.), I can tell you that the BMD is probably only average on the dog intelligence scale. Not that there is ANYTHING wrong with that. Intelligence in a pet is highly over-rated. Unless you really use the dog for working, an intelligent dog is just going to be looking for trouble to get into.

My brother in law had a Belgian Sheppard. That was the smartest dog I have ever known. It hatched plots. Sweet dog, though.

Smaller and lighter is better for the Tandem jump :)

Are you talking about stomach inversion in Danes? My uncle has two of them. They don't run them after they eat. Well they don't run them at all, they are basically couch potatoes.
