Amazing Models

Flying X1 and all!. Pretty cool.

I wonder how the X1 was powered.

That's some pretty remarkable airwork. It's said money makes airplanes fly. It's a sure bet that's just as true for those rascals.

Mac's B-29 has 4 large gas operated engines, and hauls the X-1 up to altitude before dropping it into a glide. The power for the X-1 is an Estes model rocket engine with a plugged end, as it doesn't have to eject a chute like a model rocket would. He does this demonstration regularly at some events at Hogges Field, home of the SouthEastern Electric Flight Festival and sometimes the Joe Nall Giant Scale events in Georgia.

To answer some of the questions regarding sound,.. there is now a system that uses small 4" speakers and an amplifier in the cowling of some electric models to simulate real radial sounds. This is also variable depending on the throttle position of the model. If you search on YouTube for a "Corsair with Bendini Sound Module" you should be able to pick up a link for an English gentleman that has done this and shows it in the video. Really neat.

I've been flying RC for 15 years,.. and now finally getting into GA with my training. My most time consuming, and costly, project was my 65" wingspan 9lb Corsair. There are air operated retracts, flaps, full cockpit, and other details. I modeled it after the fighter squadron VF-17, and have the names of those KIA or MIA on the tail.

You can see a video of this, and my RC Dehaviland Beaver, on my YouTube Site --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy7DUIJ7zws

Dagnabbit, I was going to invent that...! Oh, well...

That's very cool- what do you know about the "head end" (playback equipment) in such a system?

Another thing I've thought of is to have a small but rockin' system on the ground that would pick up the throttle positions remotely and also somehow adjust volume for range (and maybe even Doppler effects) so that you can really get a nice realistic effect with some more "oomph"... it could also be used for announcer commentary.

A bit much, I guess, but folks who build and fly models that cost as much as luxury cars might be interested... :D

Very nice Corsair, BTW... I never got into RC but probably will one of these days.
I was a bit of a rocket nut when I was a kid- that little solid-fuel X1 is a cool idea, and pretty easy to rig.
Somebody needs to make a giant-scale ground attack aircraft that fires Estes "A"-powered rockets...

My brothers and friends flew a lot of RC as a kid. Rigging bomb releases was SOP for us. Had a Sweet Stick on floats that would carry two tennis balls. We used to skip bomb docks and boats on the lake ala "Dam Busters". What a blast. Never did come up with a workable torpedoe though.
