Hello all,

I'll cut to the point; I'm looking for an airplane and not sure where to start. I'm currently living in SoCal working on my instrument rating with plans of becoming and airline pilot. I would like something I can take just about anywhere (high altitudes, river beds, etc.) but also in a timely manner. A point in the right direction is much appreciated. Also, I'm sorry if I don't reply in a timely manny.

Thank you.

If 180 knots is fast enough...

Kodiak is for the rich guy who doesn't know any better, for the price of a new Kodak you can get a used van with a fresh super caravan swap.

But you can do better

So, you want more hardcore backcountry, not super plush seats and o2 crammed up your nose in the FLs?

Or a little less backcountry, but plus comfy seats, pressurized and planning on 240+kts

Is that a Pilatus offroading it?

And what's that other plane?

Not good at IDing civilian planes by sight yet.

PC6 porter

PC12/47

The PC12 is just at home landing on a 2500' dirt strip as a major international airport, it's not going to land in a rocky riverbed like a hard core bush plane, but they'll be just fine landing most places people would take a 172/182, and with their massive flaps, reverse, AOAs, and 1200hp, lightly loaded they handle business

Both those aren't just civilian

The PC6 porter also went by
AU23, gunship
OV12
UV20A

The PC12
U28A
PC12M Spectre

Welll you said high altitude and land on the beach right?

First you need to know your budget. In the 100k and under range you have Piper Super Cub, Aviat Husky, Scout, and Maule. Check those out.

Hi James, super curious why you don't dig the Kodiak. I saw one on the ramp (on amphib floats) next to my club planes. I've seen a little family of 5 load up into it and head out. I'm kind of in love.

Useful load, reliability, versatility (still pretty fast, but can do floats, short/rough field, etc). Also looks really comfortable.

If I had a million bucks to spend on an airplane, i'm not sure what other plane you'd buy instead.

Honestly curious.

Just a kinda sorta caravan for folks who must have "new" but can't float a 208.

Personally I'd get a porter, used short 208 with a garrett, turbo beaver, commander, etc.

A 180 or 185 in excellent condition, gone over carefully by a pro familiar with them. 120-140 grand in most cases. Otherwise It's pay me now or pay me later with lots of down time. A nice super cub, 180 hp ( 100-120 grand) is my other choice but space is limited and going high is not in the cards unless your on something.

I'm sure there is some idiot who will pay that, but you should be able to get a cream puff 180 for 100k or less.

That's as someone who has a 185

Hey, I guess I should have been more specific in my primary specs.
4 seats max
ceiling around FL18 (can compromise)
cruise around 180kt
under 150k but I'm willing to take donations

Thank you for your input, it's much appreciated

So what type of backcountry work are you looking to do with it?

You might be in unicorn ville here already.

I doubt anyone is operating Caravans or PC12s on river beds (which I interpret as gravel bars). The PC6 would meet the stated requirements, but the Kodiak is a lot faster.
