A few months back I started putting away some money via an automatic deduction, specifically for aviation. It's basically a monthly car note that I'm putting in an investment fund with the intent to use it to upgrade/repair my airplane. Do you set money aside specifically for aviation?

You will never save enough. It will take all your income, not just the disposable income.

yup. I started lessons in a C152 back in 1982 and was getting close to my solo when the wife went on a ski trip with the local park district, racked up her leg and was off work for 6-months or so. there went the extra $ and time. after that life kept getting in the way and I never resumed my lessons. but I kept putting $ away in a virtual account every month towards the day when I would resume.

then in 2012 I was at an airshow with a buddy one day and decided that now was the time. I was retired and certainly wasn't getting any younger. I had a pile of cash saved up and started training for my sport certificate in a C162. I still put money aside every month for flying...both as PIC with my sport certificate and as a trainee for my PPL. you're very wise to do the same. good luck and enjoy!
