Apologies that I haven't been around here much in the last few weeks. I started my airline training last week and so far it's been good. I've learned a lot but I still have systems and flight sims in the coming weeks.

I've learned that Jepp Charts are freaking heavy and updating them sucks.

I can't wait until I am able to start jumpseating next week after class. I have several plans with friends to ride along with them on their flights.

Jepp charts ??? Who still uses bound charts? Sounds downright primitive to me !

We still have to carry Jepp Charts since we haven't gone to an EFB system. I currently have 3 2" Binders and one 1" Binder. Plus we have to carry our paper FOM and AFM.

Same here. We have 9 US binders and 3 Canada/Alaska binders. We've been hearing about electronic charts forever and we have them in the panel but we still need to carry the paper backups.

Paper charts suck in all respects. Weight, bulk, revisions...

But you already knew that.

Glad your training is going well.

I like my NOS plates, but speak Jepp too. It's easier to toss NOS and print up a new batch for free than do the Jep revisions, of course EFB is king.

And I thought I worked for the only company that still buys paper.:D At least we don't have as many to carry being a VFR program.

Good luck on your training, have fun. Updating paper is just a ritual of passage,to make sure you can read.

My company still uses Jepps too. While I much prefer the charts themselves to the NOS plates, I don't like them enough to prefer hauling them around over having an EFB. Updates are a huge pain.

We do....but thankfully we use Jepps Airside service so the charts stay with the airplane. But after four years of being paperless in GA going back to paper has been painful. Our EFBs are coming....supposedly....since June. :(

What equipment you training on?

I received a direct mailer from sky west's recruiting department this week... Thought about it for a second...

I got one too. Not ME rated. :goofy:

I've noticed a few people got the letters as well. Did they only send a mailer to pilots with a commercial rating?

My airline still uses paper jepp charts as well! Had to do a rather large revision the size of a novel last night! We finally got word though that next month they will begin iPad distribution! I can't wait to just be able to click that update button and get rid of my massive flight kit and 3 jepp binders

i think the Skywest mailers (very glossy ones..) went to first class medical holders.
Sadly, Jepps will be hanging around the Part 121 world for a while yet. Replacing them with EFB's requires a significant amount of testing and FAA oversight. There have been hiccups that grounded a substantial number of aircraft. Also of interest; the Microsoft Surface is a popular platform, as IT departments are comfortable managing Windows based machines, whereas Apple does not have much a foothold in Fortune 1k shops. Be careful what you wish for i guess...

Many 121 ops are using iPads...

Re the skywest mailers. I am ATP rated with a couple of types but I no longer maintain a 1st class medical, only need a 2nd for my current gig. My brother is rated as a Commercial Multi and single engine with CFII rating and an expired medical. He got one too. I'm not sure what their criteria is for sending those things out.

My instructor got one, as did one of the partners in the plane. The partner is over the mandatory retirement age and my flight instructor has about 1400 hrs but no desire to go airlines. Pretty sure they just went in and said any pilot around the 1500 hrs.

I heard Jepp is pushing hard for their clients to go paperless. They want out of the printing business. No idea if that's true. :dunno:

I've never seen a parameter for pilot hours in the airman database.

Maybe that's why there have been such massive revisions lately. I was tempted to throw out all the new RNP charts as we will never do an RNP approach.

Our binders are so jam-packed full it's ridiculous! Virtually impossible to remove and replace one in flight without having a mess on your hands. I just leave it laying flat next to me. I want my EFB.

iPads are great, we've been approved for a few months now. It's great, it's also hilarious that the most modern thing in the cockpit is an iPad, by a mile.

ERJ

We are currently in System training. We still have a month and half to go.

Everything I hear about the ERJ is positive. I got to have a brief demo in the sim while I was at CVG Flight Safety. The avioincs suite is breathtaking...as is the sim! It has the new Google Earth graphics system which is incredible.

Good luck! Ground schools definitely drinking from a fire hose!

Sounds like good times. Some of the most enduring friendships I have are with pilots I was in initial training with at airline jobs. I was on the ERJ-170 last time around. It was a great airplane...Good luck with the training and have fun.
