I know that I can order a paper version or CD-ROM version of the files the FAA has on record for a particular aircraft (that I'm interested in buying), but is there any way to download the information same-day? Guess I thought the FAA would be in the 21st century with this, but maybe not...?

Aerospace Reports will get all of that information to you within 24 hours.

If you're an AOPA member you'll get a discount. There are other companies that do this, but I used them and was happy with the result.
 
I actually had just found Aerospace Reports right after I made this post. Had the reports in like 15 minutes. That's service!
