Finally got a chance to go up with a friend of mine and get some pics of his Maule.

Thanks! I've been trying to do more air-to-air work. Got quite a few planes lined up over the next few weeks.
 
First off, he needs bigger tires. No way can he land on water with those 'floats'!

Second, he needs to take me for a ride. I have a thing for Maules and really wanna fly one!

Nice pics. I would suggest a few different 'poses' like one wing up in a turn, under belly shot, etc. As always your pics are fantastic.

Had a student once who within a week or two of getting his PPC bought a Maule. He wasn't the sharpest and I tried like hell to get him to buy a C182. Needless to say he ground looped it, hit trees with it, ran it dry w/ family on board before he finally switched tanks thankfully. One student I was glad to have severed ties with.
 
This was me flying my plane and shooting out of the left window. Not my normal process. I've got two commercial pilots lined up to fly me for future shoots, then we can get more creative when I can focus solely on the photography. I have a pilot in a gyroplane for planes that can fly clean at 100mph or less, and a 210 that will fly me for anything else. Practicing for now, but hope to go into business soon. Have to figure out prices, but some people are selling photos I wouldn't share if I took them for free, so I've been motivated!
 
You should do well as your pics are some of the best I've seen. Good luck, should be a fun adventure and hopefully a bit lucrative for you! It'd take a lot of coordination and permission, but pics of a student on his actual check ride I think would be attractive.

Thanks for the kind words. Photography is my second hobby, flying is the first. Not looking to make a lot of money, but mostly to cover the costs of the pilots (and their planes) that are flying me. I really just want to build my portfolio.

As far as a student pilot on their checkride, not sure too many instructors would be happy with that! We have to fly fairly close and with them already being nervous it could get interesting!
 
I wish I could have joined the formation. I don't have any air to air shots of my Maule. This one is really good looking though. It looks like a recent MX-7 model. Any other details? Where are you based?

We're not opposed to doing another shoot!

I believe it's a 1974 model M5.... I don't know Maules though, so don't quote me! He went to Canada to get it, which saved money, but then the paint started falling off and it started making metal and required an overhaul. Still, he ended up at about the same cost he could have bought one here for and has a newly rebuilt engine and freshly touched up paint!

I'm based at Taylor, TX T74 and this Maule is as well. If you're ever there, stop in to ACS Avionics. Mike owns the shop and this is his Maule.

Probably so, but I as a CFI wouldn't be opposed. Examiner different deal though. ;)

It would be a cool pic of the instructor and the student together! I'm going to do a shoot for a friend soon where his Dad will hand over his Christen Eagle to him... I think documenting occasions like this are a lot of fun.
 
Maybe you have posted it before but do you have a website? Your photos are fantastic. If you have a gallery somewhere I would love to look at more of your pictures.

Thank you. It's in my signature. Just click on "AirPix" it it will take you to my photo gallery. The "Blog" is photos with stories, but I tend to get behind on the Blog, then catch it up after several months!

Unfortunately, I got sick (finally caught whatever all my co-workers have been passing around) and spent the weekend wishing I were flying. :(

Great photos, as usual. And do I recognize Granger Lake in the background? ;)

Actually did these on Monday afternoon! Yep, it's Granger. Nice close place to take photos! I may be ready for you this weekend if you want to get some pics. I have a 210 as a photo plane now!

Thank you! Canon 70-200 F2.8 ISii The best zoom lens made in my humble opinion! I also have a Canon 24-105 F4. A lot of air-to-air photographers use this lens. I'm going to buy another camera though since I don't want to switch lenses in the air!

Thank you. I'm going to shoot a few more of my friends and then we'll be ready. Going to try to keep it affordable. The Maule will be one of my photo ships. He said he can fly without the baggage doors, so I can sit in the back, with my harness on, and have an awesome window to shoot out of! He also has a 210 that will be good for faster planes.

The paint flaking off is a signature feature of Maules ;-)

I owned a couple Maules. Good plane for the money but you are right about the earlier Maules and their paint. Both my 80s models had razorback and I wonder if that was part of the problem with adhesion?

To be clear, flaking off is an understatement on this plane. It was falling off in sheets. I can't believe a plane from 1974 kept it's paint until 2016, then shed it! Maybe, but I think it had been repainted at some point and not done correctly.
 
  • That sounds a bit more extensive than the usual little flakes at the edges of the color stripes.

Yep. Huge chunks were coming off of the bottom of the wings, and the rudder. All fixed now though!

Looks like we're on for Friday morning and Saturday morning too if the clouds cover isn't too high. BigBadLou, if you're available Saturday morning I can get some pics for you.
 
Are you the photographer for the photos at the FBO in GTU?
Those are also very striking photos. Proximity and all, got me curious.
