Need more positive energy. I made it clearly known that I would have my
ticket by the end of this month (was shooting for the 30th); Ain't gonna
happen. For starters, the DPE of preference is unavailable until about the 2nd week of April. Now, weather minimums is also causing a domino effect with my syllabus requirements.

Today I had 2 flights scheduled- (1) Final Dual to culminate in CFI signoff
and my (2) Final Student Solo. Then I had scheduled Saturday morning for my Final Prog Check with the Sr. CFI (now that's getting pushed back). This is the flight afterwhich occurs final ground-prep (maint records review, oral review, etc) and then the official "you're ready" from the school to see the DPE.

Hey, Life happens, dates slip. Just thought I'd blog it.

I was signed off in October for my checkride, and did the oral the Friday after thanksgiving and finally finished it in JANUARY.

My commercial ride was scheduled and canceled 3 times before on the 4th I actually could go to complete it. Weather happens etc.

Hang in there - you'll get it ..........

Better than the way I did mine:

Signed off on Thursday morning, checkride the next morning, because it was the only day the DPE had available. Spent the entire afternoon/evening studying and felt really unprepared for my checkride.

I passed, but I tell you what, that was the ugliest 24 hour period of my life.

Yeah, you can't set a firm date with this type of thing. I wanted to be done by November of 2008 (the good weather was holding) but ended up taking it in Feb of 2009...in Minnesota. At least the climb performance was good.

Just stay the course, and do what you need to do to finish. Even if it takes another two months, you'll still have the very best part of the year to fly as a new pilot.

I was hoping to solo in March, but stuff happens. The weather hasn't been helping.

Sounds like get-there-itis.
I suggest you rid yourself of this tendency sooner than later - it's been shown to be a dangerous condition for pilots.

I understand where you're coming from and yes, I do have some self-induced pressure to stick and stay til' completion.

Acknowledged.

However, shouldn't a person set a goal and be prepared to change the plan before relinquishing the goal?

Isn't the cure for get-there-itis a mindset of willingness to accept the situation as it is and then change to suit?

I'd like to know more about get-there-itis and what it really is or is not. Discussion? New thread??? Here: http://www.pilotsofamerica.com/forum/showthread.php?p=696245#post696245

The thing that prompted my comment was your "making it clearly known that you would do X."

Many pilots are goal-oriented. And, as you've noted there are ways to make that work.

Another thing to realize is that many of us are "proud." This can lead to unwise efforts to save face in front of others.

Additionally, the "others" to whom we are making promises or declarations may not fully understand the complexities involved in ADM. For example, they may expect that you will safely transport them to the selected destination in a timely manner - that it's just like "driving a car." Of course, we know it's not. Nevertheless, we may feel increased pressure to complete the mission as originally stated - whether that pressure is self-imposed or external. So, it's another thing to work into the plan - managing the expectations, or mindset, of others.

Yes, and when
I made it clearly known that I would have my ticket by the end of this month
and then I realized it wasn't going to happen, I had to accept it and eat face then. I had to spread the disappointment.
