I received my pilot certificate in August 2020.

I completed my Fundamentals of Instructing in December 2021.

I am currently studying for my Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) rating.

Does any here have their AGI rating?
 
Yes. You should get the instrument at the same time and take the instrument ground test; they cover much the same info and that way you only need to study once. Once you pass the tests you need to visit a FSDO to get the certificate. I’ve made a little money from it and if you plan to be a CFI you might be able to make some money teaching ground school while you work on building your hours.

The Remote Pilot Certificate can be done online and is kind of fun.
 
I have my AGI but not the IGI. I may add that on at some point. I’m working on my CFI right now.

I now understand what it means when my flight instructor said my pilot certificate is a license to learn.

Has that recently changed? A few years back a DPE issued my AGI.
 
There is no involvement with a DPE. In fact, you do not have to be a certified pilot to be an AGI.

In order to be a AGI, one must:

Have taken the Fundamentals of Instructing (FOI), if you are not a certified teacher or not an instructor at a university,

Take and pass (70%) the AGI knowledge exam,

Complete the FAA Form 8710-1,

Go to FSDO with (FOI test results, AGI test results, and completed form 8710-1),

Walk out with temporary certificate.

I used the DPE to issue the certificate.

I got mine a few years ago and a DPE could do it but none in my area were authorized to. Getting the FSDO to do it was fairly easy, I just made an appointment, showed up with my test results, IACRA login, and ID. Took about 15 minutes.
 
Fun fact. In order to actually start teaching someone you need to have a CFI give you an endorsement or complete a CFI currency program. I just did Sporty’s because it’s free for both ground and flight instructors. Some of it is also interesting.

Do you have the link for the Sportys ground endorsement?

When one teaches should they log that time and does that count for anything?

Do you get another plastic pilot cert for IGI/AGI?
 
It’s not an endorsement, it’s a course. They say it takes 16 hours, but that’s the minimum. Some of the modules are boring/not relevant and take 15 minutes so you just have to keep the window open until you get the right amount of time to take the quiz. Others are interesting and have good videos and links to other documents and can take a couple of hours to complete.
I just told them I have a ground instructor certificate and got a certificate of graduation when I passed the final test. The ground instructor certificate never expires but you need to satisfy § 61.217 Recent experience requirements. One way to do that is to take the test. Unlike the CFI currency there is no notification of the FAA that you are current and since it never expires you can get current at any time.

One other way to maintain your certificate is to teach someone. There is no regulation or Legal Interpretation that I am aware of that defines what that means. One way to prove that you taught someone during the previous 12 months is to log it somewhere. Unlike flight instructors, ground instructors are not required to log ground instruction given or keep a record of people who have been endorsed for a knowledge test. Some CFIs use their ground instructor certificate for knowledge test endorsements so they don’t have to keep those records. It doesn’t count for anything.

Yes, you get a ground instructor certificate with the same certificate number as your pilots certificate. On the back are your ratings, e.g. Advanced Instrument

Yes, I have an AGI, but I have no idea what that gets me, or how I got it.
 
yes i recommend sheperd air and get the IGI while at it
