ADSB for Champ

I'm looking to get into a simple tail wheel plane like a Champ. If it has an electrical system, how much do I need to budget for ADSB assuming it needs a transponder too? Live outside of Boston so don't want to be limited. Thank you.
 
Microair now has a small version of their miniature transponder that has an altitude encoder and ADS-B built in.


It's listed as $3,500. You'll also need a transponder antenna installed. I'd count on ten or so hours of installation time. Probably should budget ~$5,000.

I have the Trig TT22 in my glider running off a 9ah LiFePO battery. I prefer the Trig equipment over the Microair. But mostly based on my experience with their radios.

With an electrical system with enough capacity you can pretty much pick any product. The Trig is just the one I am familiar with.

I do fly a 172 with the Appareo Stratus ESG, which might be a good fit also with the added benefit of having Wifi ADS-B In available.

About 5K is a probably a good number to budget for. If think my Trig 22 was about $3500 for just the hardware, but I installed in myself and it was for an experimental aircraft , it was also about 3 years ago I purchased it.

I was in Boulder recently and saw a sailplane on ADS-B (who *doesn't* whip out ForeFlight upon seeing an aircraft?) and was wondering if they used "real" panel mount avionics or some kind of specialized low SWaP thing...

Trig, Micro Air maybe Becker are about the only ones that are low enough power to run off of a battery and small enough to fit in a in a glider panel.
 
You can easily spend a quarter of the value of the plane doing it. Both in installation and maintenance. Keep these classics simple. I believe the glider units are just for gliders.

If you need a transponder too, I put the Appareo in my Cessna 140 and one was already installed in my Mooney when I got it, I love the model. I think its greatest advantage is having the stratus 3i paired with it, its just like the portable stratus that most are familiar with, but it just happens to have a charging port, and connection to transponders antenna, on the transponder for it. So it can be mounted somewhere behind the panel, as it uses the transponders antenna for the "in". This means you have an "in" with ADSB that comes on the minute you turn your transponder on for an iPad or whatnot. For a fraction of the cost of an "out and in" panel setup for those of us that are never going to have a panel mounted GPS display. I think that 5k mark is probably pretty reasonable to estimate, my install was a while back but I think that is probably a pretty accurate guess.
