Funny, I've never had any interest whatsoever in learning guitar. Tons of people have. Maybe it's cheap to get into (compared to other instruments)/easier than it looks to at least get the basics working.

I have one guitar (I’m a drummer/percussionist) and I know the generic 7-8 chords. Terrible about chord transitions and no calloused fingers due to infrequent play. If it’s a g,c, d, e, or a-chord, I got ya covered. Others need not apply, lol.

You’re most of the way there.
If you’ll add on the basic E-shape and A-shape barre chord forms plus learn the pentatonic scale (5 notes) you’ll be able to play simplified versions of most popular rock and country tunes without sounding like a complete hack.

Stop worrying about barring the B and E strings. Just play xx321x for now. It’s still an F chord (F A C), will sound just fine, and is easier to play.

Oh, and I wanna trade my classical for a bass. Started on bases in '67, Unc Sam called, and resumed learning in 2013. So, I like to tell peoples I been playing for 50+ years, what's a little white lie eh? so what if I had a 50 year break.

Well, if you add the F chord to your stable , you can play about half the songs ever written.
edit: Oops. Should've read the rest of the posts. F and Am chords have already been covered.
The trick to a barre is to roll your forefinger slightly so you’re using the hard, flat side of it rather than the fleshy fingertip.
