Hot on the heels of WD's buyout of Hitachi storage.

I looked around at a few Sammy hard drives, having spotted some excellent prices, but never pulled the trigger as the reviews seemed to be fairly negative, especially about the RMA process.

So who does that leave? Toshiba?
 
And Samsung drives will now have the quality issues that Segate drives do.

From what I gather, Sammy will be bringing the Seagate average down.

I better go buy some Hitachi drives before WD takes over...

I have always had problems with Hitachi drives...
 
The IBM drives used to be pretty good, but I don't remember if that was before Hitachi bought them. It is such a shifting landscape that I find it difficult to make any good prognostications. Basically, you pays your money and you takes your chances! :(
 
And then there were three...

I better go start figuring out the SSD landscape. ;)

Yeah, most of the "server quality" tests I've found online lean toward newer Intel chipsets so far, but they're pricey.

There's also a whole lot of low-end junk that doesn't pass the hard-core tests with any kind of speed or aplomb (I just had to type aplomb...), but I'm sure people put them in their machines and the performance is so significantly higher than any spinning platter drive, they think they got their money's worth.

Still kinda high priced for my tastes, but I'm a cheapskate. Spinning magnetized platters are *really* cheap right now. Big 'uns.
