Farmiliar with variable inlet guide vanes and variable stator vanes typically moved by a large band that hooks them all together powered by a fuel operated hydraulic actuator? Surge valves? etc. Very, very high parts count. Seems like many things could cause comp stall.
Yep, I'm very familiar with them. And you are correct, those could also cause a compressor stall, along with a host of other things. VGVs are usually set to have a relatively high margin to compressor stall so that if they're off a bit it won't cause a problem. Of course, things can always go wrong. Takeoff is a hard point because you've got maximum air demand and minimal airspeed to help feed that demand.
