Is anyone here a 99 (or 49.5) and is anyone planning on going to the international conference in July? I will miss part of it but at least plan on going to the weekend activities.

I am a 99 but will not be attending the convention in DC. Hey Elizabeth...at least you were lucky enough to make it to New Zeland.

Not going, I know what the 99's are and I get the 49 1/2 designation but I cannot figure out where the 99 designation originally came from as when the org formed there were 117 women aviatiors. So does anyone know the origin of the name?

Sounds like a good place to pick up women.

She shakes it rather well don't ya think? I'll let ya know how bruised I get after my previous comment. LOL

Well if anyone is coming and needs a place to stay for a day or two - we've got a guest room and are close to DC and convenient to Dulles.

As long as it's not the same time as OSH (can't imagine it would be), I'll be here and POA buddies are welcome.

I thought it started that way but nowadays it is any sponsored person by an eligble 99 member, male or female?

that's probably right... like the bunny avatar by the way!

I`am a member of the Indiana Chapter. Not going to DC, but will be flying to Kansas for the Forest of Friendship. My Chapter is installing me into the Forest this year, I`am so excited and honored. This will also be my longest x-country.
Anyone else going?

Linda

Leslie and I just canceled our planned trip to Put In Bay to go to Washington for the 99's conference, instead. So yes, we'll be there!

Here's the info from 99s website, plus a little "historical background," tongue-in-cheek 1930s style:

"A 49½ can be male or female, and does not need to be related to The 99 Sponsor. The only requirement is that the 49½ be supportive of The 99 in her aviation goals and aspirations."
The program has evolved in several ways from the original concept and now includes anyone who supports The 99; mother, friend, husband, sister or whoever.

Here's the story of how the 49½s got started...

THE STORY OF THE 49 ½ ers
By George Putnam

Excerpted from: Forgotten Husband, Pictorial Review, December 1932
"Now and then my wife pulls off meetings at our home. The other day I strayed in to find some twenty-nine women pilots in possession, all members of the Ninety-Nine Club. (By the way, if you want to make the feathers fly just call 'em Lady Birds).
A while ago some of the husbands of members of this Ninety-Nine Club got together to see what could be done about it. Our intention was not so much to combat its activities as to establish a machinery for masculine self-protection.
Out of that meeting emerged the Forty-Nine Point Five Club (49.5) - reckoned arithmetically as fifty per cent of our better halves. The prime movers were Herb Thaden, Bill Marsalis, and myself. Their wives, Louise and Frances, recently distinguished themselves by staying aloft in a plane eight days, breaking the women's endurance record, not to mention the official time of Creation. With their better halves aloft in their flying boudoir, Herb and Bill endured on the ground. Herb, I believe, playing nursemaid to two-year-old Herb. Jr., and Bill learning lots about what a can opener can do in the kitchen.
Well, right up at the top of our new organization's program is the 49.5 endurance prize for 1933. The handsome trophy .. the design contemplates crossed silver safety pins mounted on a cut-glass milk bottle …will go to the licensed pilot who stays at home the longest time. We hope the presentations will be featured at next year's National Air Races at Cleveland. The plan is to have it handed out by Jim Haizlip, even though he is eligible, because his wife Mae, just set a new woman's speed record with 255 miles an hour."
