Posting this a little earlier than I normally do...but who knows they're in? Ed said the attendee list for this year is up and ready to go.

Last year had to be THE most interesting fly in of the last 18 that we have had. I hope this year can be just as interesting.... but in a totally different way. You had to be there to understand....

Pics from last year will be done soon.

Woohoo! First in the thread after Diz.

Question: Is 'camping under the wing' still the standard arrangement for folks? I know Ted's crew brings their own rolling Holiday Inn Express, but are other folks still pitching tents or are there new-fangled arrangements in place?

I was there and still don't understand.

Yeah, most people camp with their planes. There were a couple RVs and Silly Bryan was in an airbnb IIRC.

Following, and it’s on my calendar. I didn’t fill out the website yet.

SO excited you guys are planning a return. It's been forever!!!
Sending you a PM

Attendee list is waiting for you (that includes everyone on the board, and even those not on the board) to sign up!

Oh yeah, and I might have a surprise announcement about this before the end of May!

is it that you're redoing the sidnaw.org site?
I did some digging. If speed is the problem, and someone wants to help out with a server or hosting I'm listening. Comcast did bump our upspeed, so that's no longer the issue. But the server it sits on is old.

I'm planning on attending but have not yet provisioned an aeroplane. I'm just trying to get through Q2 at this point.

Ok, our last bus (the RV40) may have been more like a Holiday Inn Express, the RV45 is definitely at least more of a JW Marriott.

But yes, most people still camp under the wing. There've been a few others camping in RVs besides us, but tent camping is still the norm.

And we are planning on being there this year in the RV45. Diz knows to reserve my spot. :)

How did you and @mandm end up plugging in? or were you running generators all day?

We used generators when needed (daytime A/C, coffee maker, etc), but for the small stuff (fridge, USB’s, TV’s, etc), that runs off the battery and I have a single solar panel that keeps it recharged. But if we could run an extension cord that might allow me to run a single A/C unit on a basic 110 outlet 15amp. It’s so quiet at night that I think the generator noise would have been bothersome to the campers so we turned ours off at night. Although also not sure how far the noise travels either.

I turned on the generator when I needed AC. The rest of the time the 1200W solar array was enough. It amounted to a few hours for the day because last year was fairly hot:

2 years ago I plugged a 120V extension cord into the school and that gave me some trickle charging ability before I had the solar setup.

The new bus has no solar, but the battery bank is larger. It also consumes more electricity. I’ll probably end up running the generator for a bit each day to charge the batteries.

Your generator was quiet in my opinion. Ours, at least on the old bus, I found loud and obnoxious. It's was a lot better than it used to be after some improvements I made, but I still didn't like it. Our new bus has a better/quieter generator, although I still need to do improvements. #teddoingtedthings

I’ll reserve the same RV spot as last year as well please, that shade from the building really helps when it’s hot out.

I s'pose I was thinking, if I'm going to get the family units interested in this trip, as a sweetener - I might RV it up as well. But then I was thinking, not flying is no fun. So perhaps we'll fly to Eagle River, rent an RV there and drive up. Also the plane I have best/easiest access to at the moment doesn't do grass, so it solves that problem as well.

I’d love to fly in, but tent camping in the summer is a challenge, we like AC. Maybe I could RV and fly in, but I need to think think.

For this event, there is sometimes frost overnight. Typically temps are 40s to 60s. Summertime heat is not likely to be the problem.

Last year was HOT!! Haha
Looking forward to seeing you there!

That's the magic of the UP (at least the very little bit that I have experienced). One year it was so hot that you could barely stand to be inside a tent and the very next year we woke up to frost on the wings. The good thing about the cold nights is that you can 'drink your jacket'.

Generally the case. I was surprised at how warm it was last summer.

Yeah, I was thinking overnight temps. Cause that's when you'll be in the tent. But, yeah, it was warm last year.

It looks like Sidnaw temps are typically in the 60's that time of year. That's great camping weather.

The boss already said she's not camping. I might pop up just for the day, but thats still months away.

For those who do not know ( I didn't see the date in this thread), the fly-in / camp-out is over the Labor Day Weekend.

Well, I said I was going to have a surprise announcement, and as of today the offer we put in on a place within walking distance of the airport was accepted. Much closer stumbling distance from the school than to mom and dad's place.

So THAT'S what you were doing on the way back from Hoppy's that night - you weren't taking us into the woods to kill us, you were just shopping for real estate, right? RIGHT!?

If that was the case, that was the second longest long game of my life!

Oh come on...at this point we know that you know that we know that you ARE the type guy who would say both a false thing that is true and a true thing that is false, frequently using the same words.

No fooling us twice....
