This should be easy. I need to update my nav data on the G1000. It uses SD cards. My Skybound USB adapter for the G430 only reads those Garmin cards. Jepp says any SD card reader will do. Try to download to my SD card reader, using Skybound software. Skybound won't recognize the reader. Now Jepp says, you need a different skybound adapter. Send me one. Same one I have now. Call again. Now Jepp says oh, garmin makes a proprietary card reader, you need that. What? Not according to Garmin.

How hard can this be??????? It's a frickin' download to an SD card, not a moon launch! I can't be the first person to update the nav database in a G1000. :dunno::mad::lightning::lightning::lightning:

Flyersfan, eggman is probably right. I had to install JSUM on my computer to make the 430W download go.....

The Gates/Microsoft conspiracy expands!

Not this time. This is Garmin and Jeppesen making sure you don't try to steal the data they get exclusively for free from the U.S. Government.

 I cracked up that one. Sorry, I don't want to send this to spin zone as it doesn't belong there. It's really about corporate efforts. They designed software and hardware for use in turning that into a product to be loaded into the receivers. It's reasonable to protect their investment but to do so with ignorance of basic customer service principles?

I had a thought as soon as I read your post... this sounds like another job for Joe Areeda and crew!

I'll try the new software.

Meanwhile -- this is now turning into a real hoot. I emailed tech support (because customer service forwarded me to tech service voicemail instead of the top of the tech support phone queue, so I hung up) and guess what kind of a response I got back from Jeppesen Tech Support:

I will be out of the office starting 06/13/2007 and will not return until 07/04/2007.

I will respond to your message when I return.

Yup - an autoresponse. Is it just one freakin guy working tech support???

That's what I was wondering about. How easy would it be to take that data and incorporate it for a SD Card to load into a GPS receiver? It's well beyond my skill but we have some incredible geniuses on this board.

That's where the proprietary data format and obscure hardware comes in. I've heard (Lance?) that the cards aren't even formatted with a standard file system.

And therein lies the profit margin...

I went through a similar thing with the W upgrade. Ended up needing the new version of the Skybound software.

I'll be damned -- it worked. Well, at least, it seemed to work. At least it recognized my card reader. We'll see if the data made it to the card when I go flying tomorrow.

Now, how come Jepp couldn't give me that answer? It's not like they didn't have enough kicks at the can! Sheesh!

:dunno:

When I called Jepp to change my service they told me that I'd have issues unless I upgraded the software. I didn't even have to ask, they gave me the answer to a problem I didn't know I had.

Anyway, glad to help.
