27 story high aviation monument proposed for Ohio

3 miles from KDAY and 200 feet high. Just how is this a danger to aviation? Most of us only fly that low on final. Given where it is, under 500 feet would be clearly illegal; 1000 feet, maybe.

Just starting a conversation. You know how we pilots here like to conversate (argue). LOL

I look at it more from a financial standpoint. That thing can't be cheap to build nor maintain. I realize Ohio is trying to capitalize on their link to the Wright Brothers, but wow.

I deny that. I will not receive a penny from it! :(

"Birthplace of Aviation" is a bit of a stretch considering aviation includes more than just airplanes. There were balloons and gliders before the Wrights.

The video says the model has been tested in a wind tunnel, but is looks to me like it could break its stick and fly away.

I also wonder how they are going to raise the money for such an ambitious project. I looked at the list of donors and don't think they are close.

I drive right by that location, and have for the last 35 years on my way to Wright Patterson.

I think it is a cool idea.

That is where I'm sure some taxpayer money will come in, and that is where I draw the line. The government should not use taxpayer money on such projects. Especially seeing how we don't have money to fix the things we need in the first place.

It's a cool idea but given the choice between spending the money on this or a grant to build some more T-hangars who is going to choose this?

Where did you get the idea that those were the two options? This is a charity that is building a monument, not the airport authority sitting on a bucket of money and trying to figure out how to spend it!

You're right, of course. I was surprised that it looks like they are well north of a million dollars already. I was surprised they got that far.

The 10,000 sq/ft building will cost more than the funds so far committed, much less the monument itself.

So if someone flys into it, is it a midair or CFIT?

If someone flies into it where it is located, they don't deserve to be a pilot. And if they do, then Darwin just culled the heard!

The monument should be 20-feet high and 120-feet long.

Yeh but I think those Ohio brothers really just came down here for the BBQ. I'm sure they could have flown up there as well.

All kidding aside, the books I've read point to their desire for privacy/secrecy during the experiments. They also wanted a constant wind for lift.

Say what you will but the first powered flight was in NC, not OH. Suck it yourself.
The best argument I heard on this subject was "so if you go to Burger King and get a Whopper to eat at home, does that make your house "The Home Of The Whopper"?

Meanwhile CT suffers from a form of indentity crisis as they cannot claim either "First in Flight" or "Birthplace of Aviation" no matter how hard they try to.

I thought that it wasn't the Wright brothers that flew first? Something about France? :stirpot:

Seriously, though, I can't see this being a hazard at all. The USAF memorial near the Pentagon is MUCH taller than that and is close to DCA and the Pentagon heliport.

Off topic - Guy comes into the Admiral's Club and sits at the bar. He asks if he may eat his Burger King food that he had brought in. The bar tender (nice lady) brings him a plate, cloth napkin, and silverware. I looked and them both and said "Didn't you say Buger King?" kind of odd and funny. Not sure I've eaten BK that way.

Back to where flight initiated....

Yeah I get it, just saying aviation could use stuff like more hangars or public exposure more than a historical monument right now.

I lived in Cleveland for 6 years. I truly appreciate Ohio for it's contributions to out history.

Ohio has a way of taking a part of history and over capitalizing it.

The video does not state the initial cost and the ongoing cost.

I am all for it if Ohio (or Dayton) pays for it. Keep my tax dollars out of it.

I lived in Cleveland for 6 years.

My Sympathy:D.

BTW, Cleveland is the only place in the known Universe where both the River and the Mayor's hair both caught on fire, albeit at different times and locations in Cleveland.

As far as the Monument being built, I give it a similar chance as me winning the Powerball Lottery.

Cheers

Ohio STILL won't have as big a useless phallus as D.C. LOL!

Been proposed for years and will never happen.
