I think that was more my curiosity: Do pilots sit around and say things like "man, I wish I had an instrument/device that did X" ? I recognize it's a long process to bring a device like that to market, but I'm sure prototypes are experimented with. Maybe it's a long shot.
I develop product prototypes using small development circuit boards. I'm super psyched to get my pilot's license, but want to keep my costs low. I wonder if there would ever be an opportunity to trade CFI hours for in-kind hours developing some avionics product idea said CFI has. Does this...
I'm not trying to justify anything. I'm just looking for clarification. I'm not yet a pilot myself.
So, say I have a pilot friend who is going for a local flight. He offers for me to tag along. I offer to pay half the expenses, and he accepts. This is legit, correct? I guess I'm trying to...
Sorry, I must not have been very clear. What I meant was: Suppose Person 1, who is a pilot (PPL), wants to build time and would be psyched to cut the cost of a flight here and there by sharing costs (rental, fuel) with someone else. Suppose Person 2, who may or may not be a pilot, is trying...
What if the pilot is trying to build time and the cross-country route happens to fit his/her mission? In that case flying from Point A to Point B is a shared, common purpose in some sense.
It's my understanding that a pilot with a PPL can share the cost of a flight with passengers, but can't receive "compensation" for ferrying passengers. What I'm not so clear on is whether it's legit for a pilot to agree to ferry an unknown individual from point A to point B on a specific date...
You guys are definitely on my list! And I should be on yours apparently. I found out about you a month or two ago. In all the parts of this thread suggesting I buy a smaller, local use plane and rent for my longer trips, your 3 planes have been in the back of my mind as a great option!
@denverpilot I think I was already aware of most of what you said there.
I wouldn't attempt a flight over Corona or anything like it without adequate training and a laundry list of reasons not to. I'm thinking of those trips as more like "Hey dad, I might try to make a flight over to see you...
Thanks @G-Man! Just PM'd you.
I've seen Journey's but haven't contacted them yet.
I do have a couple flying clubs I'm looking into and that's a solid idea several folks had - to just "ask around" the clubs.
And the CFI with insurance for students makes a lot of sense too. Didn't think of...
I really like the idea of pursuing my PPL by joining a local club for access to lower rental rates on planes and then seeking out a part-time freelance CFI to pay directly for training (and maybe even barter for some of it using my stellar engineering skills!).
My question is two-fold:
1. What...
Duly noted on the 152s. It sounds "possible" but not a great option. I hover around 190-200# (if we're getting personal).
Thoughts on an older 172 making it safely around the mountains in good conditions with a well-trained pilot?
This is why I used the word "Dream" in the post title. Even a 152 could be considered a dream at this point! Like I said, I have no experience yet and I'm sure all my opinions might change as I get time under my belt. But who says a guy can't dream? Am'I'rite?
OK, but while we're on the...
OK, OK, I think I've got it! What about this?:
A Cessna 180 or 185 for mountain flying; quick trips over to the Western Slope, weekend jaunts to Santa Fe or up to Wyoming, and maybe a few relatively slow long distance trips to San Diego and Louisville.
Then I can flip a coin when planning...
If I went high wing, what about a Cessna 180? Is a taildragger unsuitable for long distance for any reason? (Mission 1)
Maybe just not worth the hassle?
Having a turbo seems really valuable for mountain flying, but I don't see a lot of aircraft at the local airport flying clubs with turbos so...
I have the goal of buying my own plane one day.
I'm not even a pilot yet, just studying ground school material, but I'm becoming obsessed with establishing an object for this vision I have!
My missions would involve, in order of priority:
1. Flying a family of four (2 adults, 2 children...
