How good or bad were you in early instrument training?

The thing that helped me visualize entries was to picture that if it’s not direct, I cross over to the other side from which I’m approaching the fix to fly outbound for the reversal. (I’m not explaining that very well, but it seems to work for me.)

How good or bad were you in early instrument training?

Been there, done that. I’m almost finished now, but my wall was keeping oriented on holding entries. It’s behind on me my..... left? No, I’m doing left turns it’s was a what entry, so it’s .... right? Now I’m 200’ low, what? That’s when I had my “I’m done” moment. Hang in there OP...

    Ever terrified your CFI?

Vincent Carbonara’s 172 spin thread got me thinking..... Have you ever terrified your instructor? My first, or second, or whatever it was lesson, and we’re gonna do my first stall. And I’m telling myself, “when it breaks, add power and lower the nose, add power and lower the nose....” So here...

    I can't believe I spun a Cessna 172 twice! Now I'm checkride shy.

Op, you can turn this in to a positive. My first solo flight after the initial solo, and I was to go to the practice area and work on stalls and whatever else I wanted to. I hated departure stalls, so I decided to do that one first. And of course I was surprised at how much it didn’t want to...

    Cessna flight training course

The don’t exactly match up, but it’s easy enough to go back and forth. It’s probably not the best way for everybody, but I finished the courses early, then I’d go back and review the pertinent sections for the next lesson. The school I use follows the Cessna syllabus, so each lesson is keyed to...

    Cessna flight training course

I used the Cessna/King for Private, and am almost finished with Instrument using it again. I also picked up the Sportys courses on both. For me at least the Cessna courses were better for learning the material, but hearing it presented a different way was also helpful. Same with the practice...

First solo XC - with a harrowing finish!

Mistakes happen, by both sides. Anytime I’m not sure, or it just doesn’t seem right, asking to “Please confirm xyz for 1234” can help.

    Buying a Cessna 182

My first, and expected only, is an RG - love it! I came out of training in a 172 , got about 50 more hours, then bought the 182. The transition wasn’t hard at all.

Best approach speed for a Cessna 182

Hi Dr. Bruce! It’s like having another reminder to put the wheels down, it does NOT want to slow down otherwise.

    Hey

Welcome Andy! I was a couple of years older than you when I started, and I’ll be taking my IFR test soon. I’ve found the learning is a little harder then when we were younger, but it’s not that bad, it’ll all come together. One thing that’s helped me is taking and retaking all the practice...

    Descent from Hold question.....

That makes it clear. I’ve stayed with the standard charts training to keep it simpler, but I may have to break down and go Jeppesen. Thanks!
