GFC-500 is a GPS only Autopilot

@Hang 4 Of course Heading mode and vertical modes work without GPS and I said so in the post. What does not work is ground based nav sources which was the point of the post. Re-quoting the post:

GFC-500 is a GPS only Autopilot

As OP, wanted to share this post as so many are not aware of the limitation. My opinion, Garmin is deliberately not as clear as they could be in promoting the GFC-500's nav sources. In the Garmin GFC-500 webinar I attended they talk about tracking green needles with the this A/P and should have...

Spend my money - which autopilot?

Pretty big topic and posting to a fresh thread: https://www.pilotsofamerica.com/community/threads/gfc-500-is-a-gps-only-autopilot.149393/

GFC-500 is a GPS only Autopilot

I'm getting ready for IFR testing and wanted to specifically understand EXACTLY what happens in various failure modes for my complete Garmin panel. G5/G3X/650Xi/GTX-345/GFC-500 The GFC-500 Supplemental flight manual says any failure of GPS, even if navigating by ground based nav goes to PIT &...

Spend my money - which autopilot?

Most people don't fully realize the GFC-500 is a GPS only A/P. It will track a Localizer or VOR, but with GPS. If GPS fails either due to a panel issue or satellite outage, it reverts to PIT & ROL mode set to last roll and pitch from the GPS. The 500 will still accept headings and pitch rate if...

    New panel in my 172

@kep5niner A couple of suggestions: 1) Consider the back-up G5 inline with the bottom of the G3X 2) GSB-15 USB powerport with USB-C jack. The cheap cigar lighter adapters are electrically noisey and don't deliver the amperage. 3) Revisit the autopilot decision for a GFC-500. The performance...

    So I bought a C182 - what now?

Interesting fact... The screen size of the GTN-650Xi is the same size as 530W. Look at the pixel resolution and data available on screen between the 2 devices. I'm now the happy owner of a GTN-650Xi replacing a near mint condition GNU-430W. It was not an easy decision as the 430W was running...

Planning a trip up the West Coast

+1 on @MountainDude recommendation to stop over at KPRB Paso Robles. The restaurant 29er is excellent and open until 2pm. If desired a good stay over option is KSAC Sacramento Executive in downtown Sacramento. It's easy to fly in/out with a boat load of hotel options.

Another unleaded 100LL replacement approved (Swift 100R)

The only G100UL retail pump available in the world is KRHV airport, where the airport director said as of last weekend (ending Nov 3rd) they sold over 1000 gallons.

    So Cal engine shop

The 4 big shops in California are Tim's engines of Long Beach, Victor in Palo Alto, Ly-con in Visalia and Corona Engines in Corona. Tim's will quote slighter higher than some shops because he replaces EVERY nut and bolt and threaded stud. Most shops only replace what is required. Tim's will...

    Fluctuating altimeter on takeoff

It's harder and more difficult to get mechanical gauges repaired correctly. Seems like the many of the people with these skills are aging out and retiring with some of the shops we all counted on in the past are no longer delivering the same quality. The era of digital is here and stuff like...

    Desser v VSE

I bought a pair of Desser Monster retreads for my 182P and have been very happy with them. The treads are deeper, tire a slightly larger diameter, and much heavier. The quality is there, but I'd only buy factory new tires next time largely due to the added weight, which is noticeable. Also...

    Manufacture wear limit

Your punch list for 50 & 100 hour inspections plus annual inspection are itemized in: * Cessna Service manual * Any STC documentation for continued airworthiness for a given aircraft * Also AD's can have wear limits for a given item on a plane. Cessna Seat tracks as an example * Specific...

    Air-to-Air Cherokee 180

Maybe the most handsome Cherokee I've seen. For me anyway, unusual to see this level of investment in a Cherokee. Nice to see.

    Odd GNS 430 Behaviour

@vontresc have you swapped the original unit back? The antenna connector could have had oxidation or corrosion which was resolved or partially resolved by exercising the connections when units were swapped. Check connector condition and perhaps try again.

To go with tinted windows or not…

I went from clear windscreen when the plane was purchased to Great Lakes Aero solar control grey in less than a year. WHOLLY COW what a difference with regards to visibility. Please under no circumstances should anyone ever buy a clear windscreen for an airplane. The UV intensity of the sun...
