Kortokrax, Olshock, Schaffner LOI’s (CFI currency) Rescinded

I’ve posted this on another forum but wanted to include it here as well. While going through Chief Counsel interpretations today, I discovered three Memorandums published Aug 16, 2024 dealing with the question of CFI and student currency when flying together. The memorandums stated that the...

For anyone who wishes to look it up, it's the Goodish letter from 2008.

Not quite. 12,500 pounds does not need a Type Rating. Type Ratings apply to aircraft with a maximum certificated takeoff weight greater than 12,500.

    Whats your interpretation

Greg, I believe this is the letter you are referring to. November 7, 1984 Mr. Joseph P. Carr Dear Mr. Carr: This is in response to your letter asking questions about instrument flight time. First, you ask for an interpretation of Section 61.51(c)(4) of the Federal Aviation Regulations...

    Regulations: written in blood

It's not just the medical that's revoked. All certificates are in jeopardy. 61.15 (f) Failure to comply with paragraph (e) of this section is grounds for: (1) Denial of an application for any certificate, rating, or authorization issued under this part for a period of up to 1 year after the...

    New to me METAR term.

It's nothing new. I've seen that since I was a student pilot in 1968.

    Flight Influences From Childhood

I have an uncle who I was very fond of. When I was about seven or eight years old, he drove my mother and I to LAX for a flight to visit family in Arkansas. He saw my interest in flying and we began to talk about airplanes and flying at each visit. He wasn't a pilot himself, but had a few...

    Instrument Training With CFI

Refer to CFR 61.65 (d) (2) Forty hours of actual or simulated instrument time in the areas of operation listed in paragraph (c) of this section, of which 15 hours must have been received from an authorized instructor who holds an instrument-airplane rating, and the instrument time includes...

This is why GA gets a bad rap...

He refers to 91.119 (d). I didn't post the entire letter to keep from using so much space. I think the wording in the reg is not as clear as it could be, but as a retired helicopter pilot, I understood the meaning. If helicopters were limited to flying just those specific routes, most...

This is why GA gets a bad rap...

Excerpt from recent FAA Interpretation to Mr. Noah Haydn-Myer (July 16, 2014) Your letter poses three questions. Your first question is whether the pilot must comply with any routes or altitudes specifically prescribed for helicopters by the FAA when conducting aerial filming or photography...

FAR 61.57 Recent flight experience: PIC

Correct John, in regards to acting PIC when solo. I could have been more explicit in my response. I was answering in the context he provided. I understand the differences of night vs passenger carrying currency. My point was that it appeared that he perhaps believed that he could act as PIC as...

FAR 61.57 Recent flight experience: PIC

Your question has been answered, however I just wanted to make sure you understand that the non-current pilot is not just prohibited from being PIC during the night landing or takeoff, he cannot be PIC at all.

    Did I bust Class C @ Burbank?

Here is a Chief Counsel LOI that may shed some light on the subject. It is not the exact situation, but I think it does contain some information could relate to the original post. Take what you will from it. I am just posting it to provide additional information. Mike Granby 605 Holly Court...

Can I or can I not log PIC?

Show him this. http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/agc/pol_adjudication/agc200/Interpretations/ Go to link and search for Speranza. That should remove all doubt about you logging PIC.

Why assume he performed any tailwheel flights. The Beech 18 could have been one of the tricycle models.

When does Night qualify for actual IFR?

Yes, Army. I'm retired now, so, not sure if the regulations are the same, but when we flew "actual instruments" at night, we had to choose which to log. Night, or Instrument. Couldn't log both. May be different now. Based on what Ron posted above, the Air Force and Navy were different. One...

When does Night qualify for actual IFR?

I was a military pilot for 23 years. I was an Instructor Pilot and an Instrument Examiner in both airplanes and helicopters. Never once did I log like that or even here someone suggest that was proper.
