    These smugglers MUST be stopped

Actually, Haggis isn't so bad if you don't have to look at the stomach they like to cook it in... Come to think about it, it's not so great either...

Long VFR Cross Country in a Warrior??

Not in a Warrior, but in a VFR-only helicopter (R44). I needed the hours so I did all the flying, the Robinson dealer navigated and did the radio work. 1st leg - Torrance, CA - Phoenix, AZ (short day because of late start) 2nd leg - Phoenix, AZ - Midland, TX (longish day, and we were...

    Thanks for the AD help!

The FAA saw the light because of comments submitted by my friends here, and by AOPA and Robinson Helicopter Co. They removed the preflight inspection and logging requirements. Thanks guys!

Why you should always do a full run up

You're right, Barry. At some point I was doing some advanced dual and did a whole bunch of off-airport landings. My CFI made the point that even though you haven't shut down, if you are going need a max performance takeoff, you should should do a mag check prior to spooling up from ground...

FM transmitter for MP3 player (NA)

I'd like to get a transmitter for my ipod to use both at home and in the car. Anybody have a recommendation for a battery powered one? Also, what kind of range can I expect into a FM tuner at home?

    Cool N-Number

So far as I know, time in your experimental should count just like any other time under the part 61 requirements for the PP-RH add-on. Keep us informed on how the build is coming along! PS: I read the book and it made my hovering worse :D

    Cool N-Number

Dave - Just curious... are you helicopter rated yet? The reason I'm asking is that there is a guy at my home airport who is building a Rotorway and is planning to get his primary instruction and helicopter add-on rating at the Rotorway factory.

Need help with really bad AD

Thanks guys. 43.11 makes it pretty clear what must be in the entry, but I guess that doesn't preclude using a separate logbook. The really dumb thing (to me anyway) is that I don't know any pilots who don't do a visual inspection of both main and tail rotor blades. Even on a refueling stop, I...

    Enter partnership?

Grant, I've been involved in several partnerships. Each has worked well. The real plus is that with a partnership you can get access to aircraft that would be too expensive to justify for sole ownership. There are two keys that come to mind that make everything work. First, as the...

    Death grip and students

Interesting post, Tristan. This has come up frequently on helicopter sites like Vertical Reference, where CFI's have basically made the assumption that the student will try to kill them (much easier to do in a helicopter than a GA airplane). Beyond that, a million years ago when I was working...

Need help with really bad AD

The FAA has issued an AD (see attached) which sets a very bad precedent: it describes a preflight procedure and then says that each time the preflight procedure is performed (every flight) that a logbook entry must be made. Now, you may ask, "Why do I give a crap about a helicopter AD"...

    Training Software

I agree with Kent about X-Plane. Ron's question is a very good one, though. I personally don't think desktop sims are good for much except instrument training. They also make you develop bad habits for VFR flight -- your eyes should be outside the cockpit, not on the instruments. YMMV...

What's it look like where you live?

It looks a whole lot different. This is the center of town. We live a couple of miles southwest from here -- some of the buildings are from the Revolutionary era. I get nosebleeds just looking at those other pictures. Imagine what would happen if I actually flew that high :hairraise:

    CFI to student

You pose an interesting question! Over the years I've worked with all sorts of CFI's, some of whom were easy to work with, some who weren't. The only real snag I had in primary fixed-wing was judging my flare -- I had a tendency to flare too early. In retrospect, it might have been better...
