BJJ to PHX in one day

My 182 doesn't have long range tanks. The original tanks were 65 gallons, 64 useable. With replacement bladders that drops to 54 useable. At 12 gph you get 4 hours max with VFR reserves. Personally, I try to limit legs to 3 hours. Plus I was hitting headwinds, albeit mild, the whole way.

BJJ to PHX in one day

Well, I did it. BJJ-TAZ-K88-DHT-AEG-PHX Left at 02:30 am EDT just to be sure to have plenty of time to spare if I wanted to take a nap at one of my fuel stops. I was west of the Mississippi River before dawn broke. Felt fine all the way. Didn't really get tired until I walked into my hotel...

BJJ to PHX in one day

Alright, so I need to go to PHX for business 9/30. It's about 1500 nm and I'd like to do it all in one day. Am I biting off more than I can chew? Some background and parameters: 300-ish hour PP-ASEL with IR Going solo, packing a cooler with plenty of food/beverage Straight leg 182...

Cessna 172 fatal plane crash in SE Michigan

Likely over gross and stalled on short final? I'll guess (and that's all it is) that he chopped the power like normal and got too slow too quickly, especially with the higher stall speed unaccounted for. Who knows if he used flaps or not. If you're heavy and having trouble climbing a...

First time dodging thunderstorms in IMC

So I flew down to Myrtle Beach Sunday and came back Monday. First leg of the trip I waited a bit to let the big line of storms pass, then took off and picked my way through. My Strikefinder really earned its pay. Lots of requests to ATC for deviations, which they were plenty happy to provide...

Why Twins Aren't Safer than Singles

You are generalizing and then attacking people who may or may not fit into your preconceived notion of the "average pilot". Why are you so bothered by the idea that someone might fly a twin? I agree that training is HUGE. Stupid mistakes kill too many pilots. The good news is that today we...

Why Twins Aren't Safer than Singles

I have had a semi-auto malfunction on me at a bad time. My revolvers cannot fail in the way that the semi-auto let me down.

Why Twins Aren't Safer than Singles

For the same reason I carry two revolvers, even though the statistical likelihood of my ever being in a self-defense shoot is quite low. I like to be prepared and I like redundancy. Two lungs, two kidneys, two eyes - see a pattern yet? Sure, you can do fine as a Cyclops but why? Oh, because...

Why Twins Aren't Safer than Singles

You ever fly over West Virginia? The terrain isn't that high, especially compared to the rocks out west, but you don't want to do a forced landing on it all the same.

    Why recreational pilots suck

Your cite doesn't support your hypothesis. ANY pilot of ANY skill level who doesn't personally verify fuel levels will one day end up landing off field at best, or a smoking hole at worst. NO amount of cross-wind practice or night flying puts extra gallons of 100LL in the tanks. Like, duh...

Please tell me I'm not the only one...

I think some EAB folks use a sump tank in the fuselage that all of the wing tanks feed to via gravity and then hook the fuel pump to that.

    Engine Failure on Takeoff

You use flaps to make a steeper descent. He needed glide distance to clear the water, not a steeper splash into the water.

Heart of Texas Aircraft Engines, anybody ever use them?

Charlie, I started this thread precisely because I was suspicious of low price. By all accounts your shop is very highly regarded. May I inquire what a Continental IO-360 overhaul would run?

Keying the mic in response to ATC

Ditto. Short final is no time to be chatting. Honestly the short final wind update annoys me. I'm gonna do what I have to do at that point, so shut up and let me land. I only gives two clicks because I doubt they'd see my finger.:D

Heart of Texas Aircraft Engines, anybody ever use them?

http://heartoftexasaircraftengines.com/NO_SURPRISE_PRICING.html While wondering about the cost to overhaul an engine I stumbled across this site. They certainly have nice pricing, and seem to say that their price won't creep upwards like some shops, but I am always suspicious of, "Too good...
