    Anywhere Map

Dave, you are not the only one who likes AWM. I went with AWM as I already had a suitable PDA and bluetooth GPS unit and did not see a need to buy yet more hardware. I find that my system will run about 2-3 hours on internal batteries alone. Bruce

    National Mosaic Weather Map

Came across an interesting set of weather maps at: http://radar.weather.gov/ridge/Conus/full_loop.php Can see mosaic loops for the entire US or individual sectors. Bruce

    Cirrus Jet

It must be an illusion, but it looks as if the engine's centerline is not aligned with the plane's centerline. Might be a bit interesting to fly if increasing thrust rotates the nose down. Bruce

    Electronic approach plates

I like the Pocket Plates concept, but find that they are a bit hard to read from my PDA in the cockpit. I think it is a case of too much information, too small a screen and eyes that just are as young as they used to be. When I move to a tablet-based electronic flight bag, I'd consider adding...

What are the rules about replacing/redoing seats in certificated aircraft?

You may want to consider Airtex Interiors' seat kits (www.airtexinteriors.com). Seat kits for a 172 start at $825. The materials in the kit meet the FAR requirements. All you have to fiddle with is the installation Bruce

Question for instructors and primary students alike.

Comfortable enough that so that my butt does not go numb or my back starts to hurt, but no comfortable enough that I fall asleep. Adjustability is a big plus. A good seat is not necessarily soft, it should provide proper back and leg support and does not compromise blood circulation. If I...

    Aircraft operating costs

PlaneQuest (www.planequest.com) has a database of operating costs for a number of GA aircraft. It is a little out of date, but can be used as a starting point or as a basis for comparison. Bruce

What are some of your other hobbies?

I ride and raise horses (Arabs and Thoroughbreds). I've moved to endurance and competitive trail from eventing -- the wisdom of age I guess. I sail when I can, and find turkey hunting to be a great excuse to go sit quietly in the woods on fine spring mornings. Bruce

    Would you fly a BD5?

Here's a pirep on one of the early prop jobs: http://www.airbum.com/pireps/PirepBD-5.html I figure if I get claustrophobic in a Mooney, there's no place for me in a BD-5 Bruce

    3 Year old PC

I'm still running an Apple IIgs -- there's nothing like the old Infocom text based adventure games (anybody remember "Leather Goddess"?). My X86 boxes seem to have a shorter half-life -- I go about 5 years between systems. My Sinclair Z-80 still works and the tape containing the world's worst...

    laptop is really bogging down

You haven't by change updated Adobe Reader to version 7 recently by any chance? Version 7 puts a "quick start" application into your startup directory and this quick start application seems to suck up system resources. Removing the application from your startup directory and a quick reboot might...

    Zippy car recommendation

You can pick up a Lotus 7 in the $15-17K range. No doors, no top, barely sufficient fenders -- your basic 4 tires, 2 seats and an engine type of car. You get 1100 lbs of car and, depending on the engine up to 250 hp (typical weight to power is 3.7 lbs/1 hp). Bruce
