The true cost of owning an aircraft

I love Dave Ramsey and honestly he is a part of why I can afford to buy an airplane. But, NO, I don’t keep a spreadsheet for a myriad of reasons. I don’t want to know what I’m spending. God, don’t tell my wife.

    Getting Wife Buy-In on PPL

Trying to imagine my wife not letting me back in our house... Not exactly how our family operates but all good. I agree. Buy some books and Sporty’s ground school. My wife was certainly apprehensive and still is blissfully ignorant to costs. She said straight up she would not stop my dreams. I...

Advice - don't add it up

Boy, if there was ever a better example of “ignorance is bliss” I can’t think of it. I don’t know and truly don’t want to know my cost per hour. Congrats on your project, I just don’t wanna know.

What do you use your plane for?

Yep. Weight loss is by far the cheapest way to amend a plane’s takeoff weight. It ain’t easy though. I’m down 35 but need to go another 35 at least. Good luck with that.

What do you use your plane for?

I fly to/from to our vacation home in Florida, vacations, visit friends and family (more precovid, etc. My wife does not love flying but downs wine the whole time and LOVES the utility of getting places so much faster. I was stupid; I bought without a medical or any time in decades. It all...

Cessna 210N- educate a bonanza guy

Even as a Bo owner, I’m ducking but looking through my fingers at the “Buy the Bo” replies when that’s not what was asked....

Sleep overnight in small GA airports pilot lounge?

I’m a tipper and a great one. Paid for college as a waiter (back when that was possible). FBO employees don’t know me but they surely appreciate me once they help me. If you ever open my glove box in my plane, you will find a lot of $10s. My point: I can afford a cheap hotel and, with the wife...

    Sad airplane thread

That right there. Plus the heirs thinking the plane's value is sky high when they actually own a boat anchor.

Sleep overnight in small GA airports pilot lounge?

Never done it but I’ve seen people waking up in the am at FBOs before. My wife wouldn’t sleep a minute but I’d do it in a second. I certainly don’t mind if the FBO doesn’t. Not a clue why somebody would say don’t do it for savings. This hobby is expensive enough. I’m not judging you. I’ve read...

    Texas in the winter?

Been down there quite a bit. I don’t like S Padre or the Texas beaches especially in the winter. Why not further west in Florida (Destin, 30A, Panama City Beach) or Gulf Shores Alabama? All those are better water, beautiful beaches, great accommodations and more to do with kids.

    Contract signed, now what?

I’m just over three years into GA. I’ve found quite the opposite to “everyone” will try to rip off a new pilot. I’ve been steered away from ideas of grand upgrades, given smarter options and when confused, allowed to think it out. I’ve, because of an unexpected move and purchase of second plane...

    When Selling Plane- Test Flights?

I flew right seat on my Tiger before I bought; that’s more a demo than test flight. Had a long time Bo owner I know fly my Bo before I bought. I really think it would be hard for me to part with all that cash without a test or demo flight. I can’t expect that as a buyer and later deny it as a seller.

    Landing at a private strip.

Not wanting to change the thread but I’ve actually asked for flight following to a small public airport and they had me direct to another local larger airport until I got into the flight service covering the area of the airport. Not sure if they didn’t find it in their database after I spelled...

Strongest Crosswind I ever landed in...(VIDEO)

Geez, I still wonder why content guys get on here. The shade/whining is strong. I thought the video was great. Wives and airplanes are a lot alike. Don’t guess how your’s reacts is the same as another’s. If one wife can’t handle puking on YoutTube, Flying Monkey’s is capable. Again, in my...

    Which iPad do you use?

I have iPhone X, iPad mini non-cellular (in my bag) and an iPad Pro 11” with cellular in my copilot seat or wife’s lap. That’s entirety too much avgas given to apple... I have traffic and weather on display on the panel. iPad is more for redundancy, looking ahead, frequency lookups, etc.

Flight following - not sure why I didn't use it before

Wow, lotta opinions. I also use FF for any trip 50nm or more. I’m under a Bravo but I don’t think that is a factor. I like the communication and if there is a problem, we are already talking. Amazing how many don’t talk to atc. In a type group I was in, the local guy that set up the meet ups...

    I love retractable gear airplanes

I’m transitioning from fixed gear Tiger to v tail Bonanza (obviously RG). The “feel” as they retract or come down is substantial and satisfying to the increased performance. Not sure I’ll love the increased annual and maintenance but that’s all in the future!
