    How does Rotax do it?

Playing devils advocate. People keep mentioning the inefficiency of gas turbines down low. Does that have to be the case? Why would electric power plants use them. Seems with the quantity of fuel consumed they'd pick the most efficient option.

Anyone in Socal with a RV

Realize it's a long shot but was wondering if anyone in the Socal area wants to take me up in there RV*. Figured I'd ask here before making the drive to Oregon. Anyway I'll be in the area for vacation and instrument work first half of Nov.

Has Advanced Aero priced themselves out of market

Thanks for the answers guys. I had no idea Glasair bailed because it wasn't profitable. Now I'm wondering how these home gamers are building with carbon fiber. As an A&P we generally don't do field repairs on carbon fiber. 1. It's a specialized trade skill most mechanics don't possess. 2. The...

Has Advanced Aero priced themselves out of market

Looking at kits again now that I am in a position to build and my searching has narrowed to the same suspects as years past. Such as Velocity, Tango, Rv8, and Glasair II. All of these were reasonably priced with the Rv8 being significantly cheaper. Anyway come to find out you can't actually buy...

Interested in how many have trouble falling asleep in hotels?

I spend 180ish nights per year in a hotel. Honestly feels like home away from home. Usually sleep pretty good day or night, though it doesn't help when the house cleaner in the room over is banging their vacuum into the wall.

    The Golden Age of Flying

I think I was born in the wrong decade. It must've been nice being able to afford a new ga plane in the middle class.

Deltahawk - a modern GA engine

I've owned half a dozen rx7s over the years. A turbo really brings them alive. Easy to rebuild and can make a fair amount of power for the weight, however there reputation for being unreliable and inefficient is mostly true. In single race applications they hold up well though, look up the...

    Is Internet good for humanity?

Even though we have many forms of social media I feel that we're more alone now than ever before. Very little interaction between us and I miss it.

Maybe a PC-6, not sure on the price though. Edit... never mind, no floats.

    Volunteer Private Pilot

I'd say not legal. You held out for your friend, you wouldn't have already been flying to that airport if he didn't ask.

    Raptor Aircraft

There are definitely improvements that could be had but its not all disparaging. Our engines still stack up fairly well. First the BSFC is almost identical. Low to mid .4 range. As for the dismal power per liter, most of it is from the 2700rpm redline. If you pull up a torque curve of your FJ...

Cities known for wind, where you've landed

I live next to the purple area in Wyoming. It gets tiresome living in it, especially during winter but flying really isn't a problem. The winds are mostly predictable and all the runways point straight in. Only issue is taxing sometimes.

    IFR and ToD Question

The shop I worked at has half a dozen 331 powered aircraft and the overhaul shop recommended against idle descents. Something about it causing the turbine to rub. Maybe ask around see if there's any truth to it.

    Interesting RNAV Approaches?

    NORDO - Wrong runway

I don't see the issue. Every time you step in your car I'd say there's 100 times the potential for a collision. You've got multi ton vehicles going wildly different speeds merely feet away, yet no radio. This won't be a popular opinion but I thing the ones that complain about nordo are heads...

    Cherokee 6 Fuel System Question

Generally the practice is to not leave the selector in the both position if parked on a slant. Since your six is low wing I doubt it has that. You can leave it in any setting and the fuel will stay put.

"Spoofed" N-number -- who ya gonna call?

Reading the AIM it sounds like each transmitter has a unique serial number built into the hardware that is sent with the data packet. Sort off like a MAC address. The installer or user can put any tail number, call sign or anonymous mode but the unique serial number is still sent. If that's the...

    MU-2 - One Year Report

I was an A@P for one many years ago and I still remember it being one of the most rugged well built planes I have worked on. It compares to Beechcraft in the same way Beechcraft is to piper. The only finicky thing I remember is resetting the landing gear after a manual extension. Problem with...
