Something You Will Never Hear On The News

Who were the other three crewmen aboard the helicopter and what awards did they receive?

    Get Your Props Dynamically Balanced!

It was a while before I realized that this is not necessarily a standard practice on prop-driven aircraft. Coming form the helicopter side, it's just a natural thing (and, I suspect, a bit more of a pain in the rear to accomplish). But since 0.2 IPS is the minimum to be considered "within...

    Dumb/rhetorical/hypothetical question

And that's exactly my point. To be honest, I'd likely just chicken out and either give the expected answer or at least know where to find it.

    Dumb/rhetorical/hypothetical question

I am an A&P, and have been for some time prior to receiving my PP certificate. During my flight training, one of the subjects that my instructor would bring up, in regard to aviation regulations, was about what maintenance I could legally perform on an airplane. I would commonly joke and say...

Do you abide by cloud clearance mins when VFR?

My opinion is that it is completely irrelevant. Pilots are not required to receive raining in range estimation, they are not tested on range estimation, and even if they were, clouds are not some arbitrary fixed size so in the majority of instances it's impossible to perceive distance from a...

    Owner maintenance

Not true, the FAR defines maintenance right in Part 1: It specifically excludes preventive maintenance, as you mentioned. But it only INCLUDES "inspection, overhaul, repair, preservation, and the replacement of parts". Therefore anything else is also excluded, such as removal of parts.

    Practicality of Part Ownership

Thanks! That is exactly the kind of info I was hoping for.

    Practicality of Part Ownership

Just for some background, I work at a Part 91 operator as a mechanic. The four people that are interested in forming this group are all friends at the same company, all A&P mechanics, two of which are IA's. Three of the four people travel overseas about 6 months out of the year, so unless we...

    Practicality of Part Ownership

I don't disagree, but I was hoping for (and am getting) great insight about it. Of course, we do intend (if it all works out) to split fixed and variable costs evenly. Really my only concerns are if higher levels of initial investment should translate into greater "say" in...

    Some interesting announcements from Apple...

Mac OS X has cost $19.99 for several iterations. EDIT: Should have emphasized that the new version of Mac OS X (Mavericks) is indeed free.

    Practicality of Part Ownership

I have been considering off and on trying a co-ownership deal. One thing I can't seem to easily wrap my head around is how ownership is measured among several partners who contribute varying amounts to the purchase of an aircraft... My example: We have four people interested in starting a...

    Web based home controllers?

It's an app for iPhone and Android that receives info from a small device that plugs into your car's diagnostic port. Mostly it gives me a running total of how far I drive, how much gas I use, and how much that gas costs based on local averages. There is a "crash alert" part that's in beta so...

    Web based home controllers?

While this isn't "control", it certainly seems useful. I should note that it's a Kickstarter campaign that just started, and is not available immediately. It definitely should fill a niche, but that's just my uneducated opinion. Neurio Home Intelligence...
