    Most economical VOR option

Backwards in that the horizon bar moves and not the "airplane." Welcome to the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s. By the 1970s manufacturers were replacing these with the AI you are now familiar with.

Instrument Check Ride - What exactly happens?

All good, except: There are approaches where intercepting the G/S early will lead you to bust an intermediate min. altitude. Some time back a number of air carrier pilots got busted for this. So while I generally agree with your procedure I teach students to announce the min. altitude for the...

    GTN750 to GTN750xi

I don't claim to understand much about Garmin devices, but from what I've read in this thread I wonder. If the xi uses new hardware then the "upgrade" is really a replacement. It seems to me that is trading an old one in and your trade + $5k buys a new one. If I am correct why not just call...

    Avionics TSO v. non TSO

I did forget to mention that there are a small number of regulatory requirements pertaining to meeting TSO requirements.

    Avionics TSO v. non TSO

Where is the regulatory requirement that says an owner cannot put avionics that do not have TSO compliance in their aircraft? I am aware that such a regulation exists for part 135 and 121, just not for part 91 operations. If one looks at several of the avionics manufacturers they designate...

I might be in violation of 47.41

This is less effective than most people think. In my area of law (immigration - where often lives are at stake) the USPS is considered reliable and undelivered mail eventually makes its way back to the sender. The government normally presumes any mail is delivered or returned. So, telling a...

    Engine out at night

Accomplished at night not far from me by a fairly new commercial pilot last year. At first glance no major damage to the ship, but later inspection revealed serious damage where the left main hit a Toyota Tercel. So lots of metal bent - Tercel may have been totaled - you judge whether or not...

ILAFFT: Almost Killed my Family on an Instrument Approach

Which reminds me of a story a refugee officer from DOS told me some time back. But that is for a different BBS.

New pilot. Tried running LOP for the first time. Experts, critique!

I'm not sure if this is your engine. I would follow Lycoming's recommendations. https://www.lycoming.com/sites/default/files/TIO-540-AE2A Operator Manual 60297-27.pdf [Edit] Kudos for posting the question and seeking advice.

    Turning too slow

I agree that the pilot should know and understand their avionics, this is a big part of any type rating these days. That said, they should be able to hand fly an ILS to mins if they have the equipment installed.

    Turning too slow

I didn't mean to suggest that an instructor should not have a working knowledge of routinely seen equipment. And if a student isn't able to figure out the equipment they have I'll certainly help them.

    Turning too slow

Harsh. I instruct in numerous different aircraft. I expect my students to know their equipment and how to use it. If they want to pay me to download the manual. Read it completely and thoroughly, spend 30 -60 minutes in their aircraft learning the button/knobs/settings, etc. I am happy to...
