    Night flying and weather

Ron, do you have that confirmed via recent request for interpretation, or are you once again irresponsibly quoting AFS-800 disowned material as current fact?

    Should I switch Examiners?

Well, let's first dismember the highlighted misinformation above: Totally incorrect. Totally. Here's the applicable reference (FAA Order 7110.65): 7-4-2. VECTORS FOR VISUAL APPROACH A vector for a visual approach may be initiated if the reported ceiling at the airport of intended landing is...

    Should I switch Examiners?

Question is more bogus than you think. A cruise clearance authorizes the aircraft to operate between the IFR minimum altitude and the cruise clearance altitude. With no approaches at Airport A the "minimum IFR altitude" during a cruise clearance is, as you stated, the OROCA. However, in most...

    Dishonest PIREPs

The basic story was two Part 135 cargo operations based at the same airport. One of the operators had a habit of filing bogus icng PIREPS which would effectively ground their competitor's aircraft. A pilot from the victim operation flew anyhow when one of those PIREPS was in place. He was...

    Dishonest PIREPs

Give it good credence--it happened. The story was an appealed "flight into known icing" bust and it was well publicized ~ 1 year ago.

    Dishonest PIREPs

From a regulatory point of view it doesn't matter at all if a pilot reports "negative ice". A PIREP can create known icing in a place where no icing was forecast, but a PIREP can not remove known icing status from a place where icing was forecast. From a saftey point of view, you really don't...

    "authorized" instructor overseas?

Mention John Lynch and I could believe anything. FWIW, I could imagine Mr. Lynch arguing that a foreign pilot is neither a "student pilot" nor a "private pilot" per FAA regulations and therefore unable to legally log flight time.

    Flight Review Lesson Plan

AC 61-98A, spcifically Chapter 1, plus Appendix I (checklist & record) and Appendix II (suggested topcis) has always been my favorite reference.

It looks I'm going to graduate.

OWT. Pop onto the Mooney email technical list and ask the experience of the grass runway based Mooney aircraft owners. There are several. The one I know is Australian (that's were I obtained the grass performance tables from the M20J POH).

    My Western Route

I second the North Las Vegas recommendation, but in Alburquerque I would fuel at Santa Fe on the way into ABQ, and then park at ABQ and take minimal fuel to dump any ramp/landing/tie-down fees (if that's even possible). According to http://www.airnav.com, ABQ is $5.15/gal, AEG is $3.99, and SAF...

    Celebrities at Oshkosh

This thread reminded me of a rather notable quote I once heard. During an Oshkosh visit John Kennedy, Jr. commented that he very much enjoyed attending Oshkosh because he was for the most part left alone--treated like just another pilot rather than mobbed as a celebrity as he would be anywhere...

    Spin Training and Parachutes

It isn't as difficult as you might think if you slow the aircraft. There is a local skydiver at Smoketown who exits the airport's C172 all the time with the doors attached.

    Celebrities at Oshkosh

I'm having a brain dead evening, but a famous rocker (forgot his name) and two famous NASCAR drivers (forgot their names, too--I think one was Mark Martin) were present. All three stopped by the Ford tent to drive the Rousch Mustang dynomometer drag race.

    Not coming home...

Folks need to consider how many aircraft come & go at Oshkosh (about 15,000 IIRC) and the statistical fatal accident rate of GA (about 1.4 fatal accidents/100,000 flight hours; about 6.7 accidents/100,000 flight hours). 15,000 planes flying from all over the US (and the world) to a point in...

What would you do? Fisk VFR Arrival to OSH

The time for adjusting the 1/2 mile spacing is outside Ripon, not between Ripon and Fisk. In Diane's case the three aircraft involved would need to "create" 1 mile of trail spacing while flying between Ripon and Fisk. I don't have the charts handy, but I'd estimate that as no more than ~5 nm...

Act as PIC vs log PIC - SFAR 73

The FAA won't look any further than the CFI signature and "dual received" entry on that R22/R44 PIC time log entry line. The FAA understands the difference between acting PIC and logging PIC. Same for the insurance company. I wish some CFIs understood it as well.

What would you do? Fisk VFR Arrival to OSH

First, right-of-way rules don't matter except with respect to which of the corpses will be blamed for the accident by the NTSB/FAA. You must assume neither aircraft sees you nor is aware of your presence. Assuming the usual side-by-side seating aircraft ala Cessna, Mooney, etc., with pilot...

    Accelerated CFI initial

All ATPs is an excellent "quickly practice to polish existing skills and then take the checkride" school, however, I would not recommend All ATPs at all as a training institution. IOW, I would strongly recommend that you get your intitial CFI elsewhere. Later, if you need a quick spot to add...
