Nitrogen is pumped into the fuel tanks to reduce the risk of fire/explosion. It's been used in military aircraft for some time but is relatively new for airliners. Apparently it's standard on the 787.

Here's a little twist on the question. What about using an airplane that's overdue for 100 hr for a checkride? It's not really instruction so is the 100 hr required?
