    Solo student's mishap

That was a damn hazy day. I can imagine my 17 year old self getting discombobulated and ignoring the DG, or forgetting to align the DG with the whiskey compass in the first place. Luckily for everybody, I didn't get my pilot's certificate until I was almost forty.

    Planes the movie

Watched it Saturday with my wife and our eight-year-old. I thought the story could've used more work, but they did a fine job with the aviation (lots of inside jokes for pilot types), and the 3D was a nice touch.

    Private Pilot Reimbursement

Ron, Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I'm glad you put up with us. Let me know the next time you're in the MSP area (or at AirVenture) and the drinks are on me.

    Private Pilot Reimbursement

Wow, thanks all for the enlightenment. I had been working with my tax guy (who knows more than a bit about aviation taxes), and he had been recommending I buy my plane personally and have my company reimburse me for expenses. But that leaves me unable to carry anyone else. Am I correct in that...

    Commercial Pilot Aeronautical Experience

Thanks for the answers. The trip down was pretty challenging, in that I opted to delay to allow a large cold front pass my route of flight, letting me hook into the back side of a low pressure system and an epic tailwind. It was definitely the most sophisticated flight I'd planned, due to all...

    Commercial Pilot Aeronautical Experience

A further question: for the 300 NM cross country with landings at three airports, can there be one or more overnights in there? I flew my club's Arrow from Minneapolis - Crystal to Hot Springs, Arkansas (MIC-HOT, 635 NM), spent two nights there, and flew back stopping at 3EX. I don't know if...

I got angry at CSRs today

I rode a 1987 BMW K100RT long enough to put 30,000 miles on it. I always returned the wave, without prejudice. I find "us vs them" attitudes pretty funny. Once you take a large enough view, it's only "us."

    triple diversion in IMC

A quick way to pull plates in ForeFlight is to go to the Plate tab and type in a minimum amount of information. "TEB" will get you all plates, diagrams, etc. for Teterboro; "TEB ILS" will get you only the ILS approaches; just tap the one you want. Likewise "TEB GPS" etc. This can really bail you...

    How not to die

I appreciate the effort that Dr Volandes is putting into the videos. They may or may not be your thing, but I think any effort that goes into communicating honestly and realistically to a patient about their future, whether words, videos, literature, etc. is to be commended. More so if they’re...

    Just starting.

I did it at age 39. Now (three years later) have had my IFR for a year and am looking at my multi-engine. Best thing I've ever done for myself.

    eAPIS - CBP $5k Fine - Advice?

I'd be curious to find how how the OP's case (2.5 years ago) actually turned out. I know factual outcomes are generally not supported here, but still. I'm glad I read (some of) this exchange; I learned a lot.

Foreflight caves and adds ADS-B traffic

Sometimes you need to be able to check the box for feature X, no matter how stupid it is. Seems like that's what's happening here.

Older FIKI Twin vs FIKI Cirrus

OP here. Thanks for all of the thoughtful comments. The purpose of my post was to see if I was thinking about this in the right way; it seems like that's true. I was curious to see if what I thought was true (that a relative oversupply of older FIKI Twins made for a better choice for my...

Older FIKI Twin vs FIKI Cirrus

I'm trying to compare the safety, costs, and dispatch rate of two different aircraft types that could meet my mission objectives. I live in Minnesota (FCM) and would like to use a personal aircraft to transport me around the US (primarily East of the Rockies) year round, figure 200 hours per for...

    Developing IFR bag

I carry a lot of stuff in my bag, but it's generally in the back seat or luggage compartment. I clip my CO detector on the keychain (it already saved me once), have my iPad strapped to my knee with a pad of paper and a pencil. At night or in the cold i attach my Spot locator to myself...

Dumbest thing you have done and lived to tell about it

Trusted that my autopilot had locked onto the VOR and was doing my flying for me, in actual. Proceeded to not pay attention for long enough to allow scary things to happen. Never, ever, again.
