Need a mechanic for a pre-buy inspection (Wisconsin)

Although I endorsed Spring City at BUU, I can heartily endorse Erich at Burlington Air Center as well....my plane is in his (and Pat’s) capable hands as we speak getting some new avionics. Both are great shops.

Can a airport with active leases be closed?

Nothing is guaranteed...worst case scenario: Meigs Field. More realistic situation: Santa Monica.

Need a mechanic for a pre-buy inspection (Wisconsin)

If you can get it down to Burlington, WI (BUU), Spring City Aviation employs a couple of great machanics. They did the prebuy on my Arrow last fall and currently are my main maintenance shop.

    On request, standby...

It literally means that ATC doesn’t have the clearance in front of them and they have to walk over to the printer and get it. Alternatively, they have it, but aren’t ready to give it to you yet because they are dealing with something else. It’s just an explanation as to why they can’t read you...

    Visiting the Chicago TRACON (Video)

The only time I have seen the strips tear-able in half is when they were loaded upside down in the printer. They have perforations between them. If you flip them over, they have a black like on each trip which tells the printer where to separate them...so if you load them upside down, the...

    Reduced Power takeoffs

I do derated takeoffs all the time. Higher MP inherently means higher internal pressure, so I have no problem at taking off at 25” (which is my climb power), especially when it’s just me and it’s cold outside....I’m pulling the power back to that setting in a minute anyway if I go WOT. My CHTs...

    Visiting the Chicago TRACON (Video)

It’s a good video! My invitation for local pilots to come visit still stands, but this is a great intro to the facility and anyone based near Chicago can appreciate the information.

The ‘What’s in your panel’ thread

I bought it with the KSN770, KMA30, and Century HSI. I Added the JPI EDM-830 a few months ago. The HSI is not working well and needs an OH, so it is in the shop right now being replaced with a G5, as well as the vacuum attitude indicator.

    Newer iPads

I got a new iPad mini through my cell provider (USCellular) and never activated the cellular service on it. I paid about $450 for it...I have it yoke mounted and it is the perfect size for my Arrow’s cockpit.

    New pilot considering ownership

I can’t vote because I have more than one choice. I bought my Arrow for $77,000 last October. It is easy and fun to fly, the gear goes up, and I can beat the airlines on 500 mile or shorter trips (in price and time). On the other hand, my 1300 SMOH engine needed to be OH’d less than 6 months...

    Engine Monitor, CHT or...

I put in a JPI EDM-830 when I overhauled the engine in my Arrow. It cost about $2200 for the unit and $2000 for the install. I can download all of the engine parameters for each flight and watch for trends, troubleshoot issues, etc.... I am happy with it so far.

ICAO Flight Plan transition...really this time

In the terminal environment at least, the equipment codes still show up for us as simply /G if you have a GPS, /A for dme, etc.... “Cessna 172 slant golf” is perfect if the controller asks.

    Airline route detours

The arrivals from the southwest of Chicago were closed off due to the weather, so traffic from that direction had to go join an arrival from the southeast to get into O’Hare. That area has to blend in all the traffic from the southwest with the normal traffic from the southeast, which looks...

    Busted class B......

Approach controllers don’t have the class B map pulled up while they are working. If there is any doubt, “hey, that takes me into the bravo, am I cleared into the bravo?” Will clear up any confusion immediately. If a controller says “turn right heading 360 and maintain 3,500” and that takes...

What Kind of New Instruments are on Your Wish List?

I have a $200/yr app on my iPad that shows lighting strikes (delayed by a few minutes) and other airplanes (that have ADS-B out). In a pinch, I could shoot a GPS approach with said app, too. My actual plane has a handful of pitot-static instruments, and is about to get a digital HSI and AI...

    Engine age vs hours

When I bought my Arrow last year, the engine had 1300 hours and 29 years on it. It ran great, good compressions, no signs of corrosion during the prebuy. Five months later a fatigue crack appeared in the case underneath the #2 cylinder. Having to OH an engine less than 6 months after buying...

(NOT) Flying into ORD ($$$ pucker)

Oops, I had the wrong Tuesday...we will see what next Tuesday brings. @radarcontact and I are both scheduled to work next Tuesday morning, so at a minimum someone in the TRACON will be cheering you on.

    TRSA question..

Their TRACON has two or three positions, but is probably usually combined to one. Some places split their frequency by VFR/IFR (GFK approach). Some based on where the antennas are (GRB approach). Some based on which particular scope the controller is sitting at. If you are VFR, call the...

(NOT) Flying into ORD ($$$ pucker)

Looks like east winds tomorrow. From the NE you will almost certainly get 9L which is probably the easiest taxi to Signature. IFR you’ll be at 7000’ until you’re west of PWK, VFR you’ll either get routed under the B under the departures until you’re west of ORD, then brought in just NW of...
