    Anyone heard of Angel Aircraft?

doesn't look much like a Canard type to me. The big wing is in front with engines on it (pointed the wrong way) and the tail is in back where it belongs? I thought canards were the other way around? They are neat looking airplanes but have some issues as noted. I used to take care of a number...

    Aircraft lithium battery fires

I watched a 182 burn down many years ago due to a NiCad. I think the lithium batteries are worse yet. Watching what a small lithium can do to an RC airplane I can't imagine one popping in my cessna. For the minor weight savings I think I'll stick with the tried and true lead acid. Maybe not the...

    100LL price killing GA

I'm thinking that with 100LL at $6 a gallon a couple years back we're looking at good times now. I'd love to see it lower but considering the market size and the fact that only one refinery is making it we're lucky it still exists. I'm just happy to be paying $4 instead of $6. Frank

DB Cooper a Boeing engineer on SST?

Who says pure Ti isn't used in aircraft? Its used for heat shields all the time. CP or commercially pure Ti is an excellent material for that as it is easily formed and worked and handles vibration and heat well. We used it on indycars as well having gotten the idea from the aircraft...

Converse 1I8 - Concrete Landing Mat

I've flown by there a couple times but I was always going somewhere else at the time and couldn't stop. It looks easily landable in most of the little stuff. I think my 175 wouldn't have any issues. Out west the field would be a section with nothing but dirt and landings in any directions...

    Cessna 175

I have a 1960 175A that has had the geared GO-300 replaced with an O-320 off an Apache in 1965. It has the Constant speed prop as well. It is a very good performer despite the lower horsepower (160 vs 175). The STC may or may not be available any more but it allowed the use of either the O-320...

Marion, IN - Cruise in, Fly in (KMZZ)

Last year we got a plane wash on the way home to Newcastle (UWL) and that was after leaving the fly-in early. This year is looking a lot better. It should be a lot cooler than a couple years ago too. According to fly-in posters there is supposed to be a P-38 coming to the show as well. A lot of...

Marion, IN - Cruise in, Fly in (KMZZ)

I've been to a number of the Marion fly-ins in the last few years and I think they'd be great for a new pilot. Just watch and listen like you should be doing anyway. I've seen a lot of hotshot RV guys who like the overhead approach with others already in the pattern, guys with no radios, those...

    Fooling Mr. Hobbs

One possibility not mentioned is the alternator or generator that might have some issues with the surge when you switch the master off and on. If you're not concerened about theft of time maybe you'll think about what happens if the power supply for instruments quits on a flight.....? Frank

Painting a plane....*beating head into the wall*

An alternative to sanding is scotchbrite pads which will work for roughing the surface of the paint while not removing cladding. On the other hand sometimes the scotchbrite can leave behind other issues. As the others noted if your paint isn't solid now painting over it will just move the...

Yoke all the way back during taxi why?

As a tailwheel pilot from the beginning its best to keep the stick (wheel) back in a tailwheel plane unless its windy. Show the top of the control surface to the wind was the thing I was taught. That pretty much is the same as the wind and control diagram posted earlier. As for the Cessna thing...

OV-10 Broncos brought out of retirement to fight ISIS.....

Might have something to do with the drone thing too. Why spend all that money on piloted 50 year old turboprops when you can spend twice as much on computerized electronic toys that carry almost as much. Toys to build an empire instead of serfs. Just a thought. Frank

    Landing from the right seat....

I find that dyslexia helps a lot with swapping sides of the plane. If you don't know right from left or better yet if it doesn't matter to you swapping is easy. Even landed from the backseat many times.....J3 cub of course. Used to work on indy cars that had 4 plate manual clutches. In the...

    Gah!!! Colorado!!!

Post it for sale on Gunbroker or one of the other nationally accessible sites. When it sells to an out of state buyer you will have to ship it to an FFL holder in his state. Since you're shipping to an FFL you don't need to do the background check or deal with colorado's stupidity. The FFL...

    Lateral Balance

Weight times arm equals moment. If the tanks are way out on the wing they have a very large moment. If your buddy is sitting right next to you on the other side of the longitudinal CG the moment is very low. Also makes a difference if the wings are long or short. My T craft had no issues with...

How high have you flown in a low HP plane.

13,500 in a 41 Taylorcraft with 65 HP clearing the 11K + mount Taylor in New Mexico on the way to Albuquerque. Early morning flying and no thermals required. Launched at Holbrook AZ and climbed all the way there slowly.....then power back a bit, speed up and into 4AC which isn't there anymore...

    Banner aerodynamics

Not sure if you were close enough to notice but the banners are weighted on the bottom as well. Sometimes they don't fly level (most times) but rather at an angle that makes them more readable. Depends on who the target audience is. If the plane is right overhead the banner is tilted so the...

    Red Bull coming to Indy

After spending quite a few years working indy in the pits for the 500 I'd say its a really boring race despite the speeds....from the pit wall the cars look really fast but the track is so big they don't look so fast.... As for the planes, I think it would be worth seeing at least once. I watch...
