This is a site that's good for a short graphical forecast that I'll check out in addition to most of what the others here have already suggested. Just punch in the ICAO code for airports you're interested in and voila - about 3 days of forecasts spread out by a few hours' time...

I don't blame them for being scared, nor for even leaving the water for a bit (or the day). I do agree that the manner in which the tale was told was a bit melodramatic and maybe clutching the pearls a bit too tightly.
