Turning base at a towered airport.

I do exactly what jimbilly does. My field is also a class D whose pattern gets pretty hectic and has two parallel runways. On occasion tower has told me to extend my downwind for separation so long that I should have been able to log it as cross country time. (Well, almost.) Had I turned my...

    Rust

In my seemingly never-ending quest to find an aircraft of my own, I have come across many with some obvious external rust. Things like around the door hinges, on some rivets, etc. Should any rust be a deal breaker? I have also seen several old aircraft with new paint jobs and think these most...

External GPS - Do I really need it?

I use Foreflight on an iPad 2 with a Stratus. The other day my Stratus was not receiving. (OK, so I put it on the window below the wing in a 172, so it was my stupidity, not the Stratus.) I had to actually use a VOR to find my way. :yikes: Anyway, I didn't remember that my iPhone 6 was in...

Too old to own your own airplane

Hell, you're but a youngster. I can say that with conviction since I'm a very youthful 48. In fact, a 90+ year old just landed at my airfield this week: http://m.click2houston.com/news/plane-crashes-near-runway-at-hooks-airport/33358522. Okay, bad example.

    Hangar fire at KDWH

A hangar/home got destroyed by fire yesterday. From the video, it looks like there was a large explosion afterwards, so I assume the hangared aircraft was destroyed also. I'm just glad nobody was hurt. This is Hooks airport near Houston, which is my home field, but I don't know any details...

BFR after 2.5 years of no flying...

Like Unit74, it was a while since I stepped into a cockpit--over 20 years! It took me less than 2 hours of dual (plus the required 1 hour of ground). It probably would have been closer to an hour of dual, but the first day the winds were pretty hairy so my instructor landed us. I did...

    Learning Magnetic compass

6PC, I believe eetrojan forgot to mention that this exercise is only to be performed while flying inverted. That should come around the third lesson.

    miscommunication lesson

Bryan, it is obvious that you you do not understand that we GA folk are just annoying mosquitoes. Get the heck out of the way so that the Citation on a 10 mile final does not have to deviate from his stabilized approach.

    PA-24 down near San Antonio

So sad. Like hindsight2020, I will make it a point to at least always go up without family after maintenance. Hopefully the NTSB will find the causes of these recent incidents soon, so that we can learn something from these tragedies.

    Cost of changing out autopilot

I am looking to purchase maybe something like an Archer II. If I found one with an autopilot unit that needed to be replaced, is that prohibitively expensive? It would be one with the same number of axis controls, so I wouldn't necessarily need to have the airframe (wing or empennage) opened...

Well kiss my azz! I'm a Pilot!

NICE! Though looking at the early start you are getting on those drinks, we may not expect a cogent report until tomorrow. :goofy:

New Aircraft Owner of a Cherokee 180D

Nice bird. I am looking at hopefully having my own Cherokee 180 very soon. The thing that threw me was the lack of shoulder harnesses. After reading on here a bit, I have decided that one of the first things I do when I get it will probably be to get some harnesses installed.

    Put the damn phone down!

Earlier this year, one of my employees got angry at her boyfriend, decided to jump out of a moving car and was drug 100 feet. It was not pretty, major skin grafts and broken bones. She was lucky to even survive, was unconscious for several days and it took months for her to be able to even...

Foreflight vs Wing x vs Garmin

I use Foreflight Pro, but like others this is the only one I have really tried. I went through the same dilemma as you, but in the end I mainly went with Foreflight because so many of us here use it and I already had a Sporty's account. The maps on my iPad2 are so much easier to read than...

    Tank switching

I wonder about the prudence of the Owner's Manual switching from an intentionally dry tank, likely done to maximize the range. Should the other line will not deliver, then you are suddenly in an overweight glider. Not having the option to switch back would suddenly transform the "oh crap"...
