    Holds: How common are they?

I used to get this quite a bit from Chicago Approach. Cross 20 miles south east of the JOT VOR at 4,000. Pilots's discretion. I would do the same thing figure out a nice 500 ft min and invariably they would issue a descend and maintain or an expedite descent. I always wanted to say you did say...

    Holds: How common are they?

Slowing down is a good idea. I remember on this approach, I was coming in from the West. The wind and the ceiling favored the west runway. I heard the plane in front of me get the full approach, so I was actually probably going a little faster than I needed, I was already flying out of my way...

    Holds: How common are they?

I have never had this happen quite so obviously, but I have definitely suspected that some of the vectors off my course have been to move me out of the way instead of issuing a hold.

    Holds: How common are they?

I was told to expect one a couple of years ago, but then whatever was going to cause it changed and they cleared me direct. About a month ago I was going into a 1 in 1 out airport right at the mins with a plane just ahead of me on the approach. I figured I was was going to get a hold then...

Long forgotten regulations of the past

I have had a couple of younger CFI's question it, but when I pointed out that they were 1 when I got my HP endorsement, they generally get pretty quiet. The CFI's that do our insurance sign offs are older, and so far they haven't pushed the change. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to get one, I...

Long forgotten regulations of the past

There was no Complex endorsement, only HP. I believe that changed in 97, the same time solo/PIC changed. I do not have a Complex endorsement, although I regularly fly a retract Bonanza. I got the HP in 94, and have PIC time before 97 in a retract. I am definitely getting old when...

Long forgotten regulations of the past

It's pretty weak: If it wouldn't be too much of a bother, and I wouldn't ask if it wasn't extra super important, but would you please line up and wait just for a little bit. So sorry for the inconvenience.

Long forgotten regulations of the past

You are correct. I forgot about that. That only lasted about a year.

    Cheap gas

Des Moines has always been high. I have always assumed that taxes play a big part in the price variance. I know the taxes on auto gas are vastly different in all of the various counties in the Chicago area. I am sure it also has to do with overhead. I haven't seen too many self serve...

Long forgotten regulations of the past

Well at least I am "English Proficient" now. It says so right on my cert.

Long forgotten regulations of the past

I can't recall all of the weather changes, but I know the temperature and dewpoint were given in F.

Long forgotten regulations of the past

We used to say "Position and Hold". Although that ones not that old.

Long forgotten regulations of the past

IIRC they added a dual night cross country to the PP sometime after I got mine.

By the way TRSA's still exist, although there are only a few of them.

What do the regs say about knowledge requirements on checkride?

So much of aviation training is geared at just learning enough to pass the exams. When I first started my IR, I picked up a training book that had nothing but questions and answers in it. While I understand the concept, that is not the way I learn. I tossed that book, picked up Bob's the...

    Solo requirements for commercial

I don't think I realized that had changed. I remember as we were walking back from my PP check ride, the DPE told me that I could log that flight as PIC. That was how I knew I passed.

    ApplePay

I use it all the time. Our local Grocery store (Jewel), Meijer, Petco, Walgreens. It takes two seconds and I haven't had an issue except at CVS, which won't take Apple Pay. So I drive past CVS to the Walgreens a mile further. Kind of the principal on that. We use Bank Of America and they...

What do the regs say about knowledge requirements on checkride?

That is perfectly fair, and something that I am pretty sure I could have done at the time. I wouldn't have any issue doing it now, but my situational awareness is much better now. It is interesting that it never came up in training or during any part of the exam. I was definitely prepared to...

    Cheap gas

Even last year I remember fuel being pretty cheap in Mosby. I used the map in Foreflight to find it then. Don't think I paid too much attention to how accurate it is, but this is what it is showing today.
