Foreflight Synthetic Vision in the plane today.

That is exactly what it is with one caveat. With just the ipad (no Stratus 2) the horizon moves with the plane, but it moves flat (as if you were yawning the plane to turn). The horizon is always level to the bottom of the ipad. So when I was on base turning final, the runway rotated into view...

Flight Following and Entering Class B

I would agree. I have never had an issue getting a clearance through the Denver Bravo. Dallas I have tried a couple of times and was told no. I don't think I tried in LA, as they have the corridors through the class B. Before I had my instrument, I would try to use flight following as...

Foreflight Synthetic Vision in the plane today.

Keep in mind it is still pretty early with the FF release. You will probably see videos like that show up after time. I will tell you that what was on the screen of my ipad was exactly what was in front of the plane. The buildings above correlated precisely to where the buildings actually...

Thanks. Your video is awesome, I just couldn't remember who put it up.

Flight Following and Entering Class B

It seems to depend on the area. Up here around Chicago, unless it is 3:00 am you will never get any clearance into the Bravo. Even on an IFR flight plane they route you as far away as possible. Other areas are different. I was on flight following on my way to an airport on the other side of...

Discussing GA Risk with Family / Friends

Exactly. I usually tell them that in 20 years of flying I have never had so much as a scratch on a plane. Then I ask them how many car accidents/scrapes/fender benders they have had. That usually stops them pretty quickly.

Foreflight Synthetic Vision in the plane today.

For the $25.00 per year, the cost of the SV to me is pretty much a non-issue for me. The harder part is its value around here. I mean I had to fly along the lake to get anything tall enough to show up in red. As long as you can avoid the Sears Tower (I know) you will pretty much run out of...

If this link doesn't work go to the Foreflight Facebook page and scroll down. It is a video of someone using a flight simulator to show what the synthetic vision does...

Chicago area experts, trying to plan a trip

Unfortunately there aren't too many airports that are close to downtown. KLOT is about 40 minutes or so and has a rental car counter right in the terminal. It is an easy in and out airport. KARR, KDPE, KPWK are also fine choices, again a little ways out. All have good facilities. 06C...

"I learned about icing from that...

Scott - I didn't realize you were on this forum, that is great. Everything I have learned about Skew-T has been from reading your work. I spent time learning how to read the graph, obviously I need to go back and understand how it is generated. Weather products are much easier for me to...

Any other Home Brewers out there?

I did the same went from kits to all grain. I went through a couple of mills to find one that cracked them open the way I like. I agree with everyone else's comments, that you have a lot more control over the quality, and flavors (I would recommend being very careful with using smoke...

    ILS Approaches against the winds/pattern?

Just recently KARR has had a rule with no opposite practice approaches. They only have one functioning ILS at the moment. The controllers there feel the same way. On my IR check ride, and for countless practice approaches, we flew the ILS 9 when traffic was landing on 27.

That is a great point. I know the maintenance level and we have a backup vacuum pump, so that minimizes the chances of something going seriously wrong. If I was going to fly a rental in IMC, it would be a much easier justification.

"I learned about icing from that...

At the beginning of this winter, I decided to learn to use the Skew-T for tops and ice. The ipad app is good, and the forecast feature is nice. However, My issue is location. The only place the Skew-T can be accurate is where the sounding took place. I assume they have a way of...

Foreflight Synthetic Vision in the plane today.

I have never had an issue with losing the signal. For years I had it sitting in my lap, and recently I came up with a solid Ram Mount solution. I had an external WAAS receiver years ago, thinking it would be better than just the ipad, and I didn't find that to be true. It was just one more...

    Love Those 30-foot Planes

Because they would multiply the two numbers and figure out a way to charge us for the result.

Foreflight Synthetic Vision in the plane today.

Very true. I was kind of thinking of an off field VOR approach. 3 minutes at MDA can feel like an eternity. Although I guess just the FF moving map does the same thing. Come to think of it, the last time I flew an off field VOR approach at the mins was before I had a moving map.

    ILS Approaches against the winds/pattern?

I do it all the time at non-towered. Although I try to be courteous if there is other traffic in the pattern. Generally I will break off before 200 AGL. I practice it all the time at towered as well. It's not uncommon to have two aircraft approaching opposite sides of the same runway. As...

I would agree. I think on an approach down to the mins, just to confirm the runway is where it should be. The only other thing I could think of was that just off the approach at KEYE is a tower that is pretty tall. I have seen it stick out of the tops, and then have it gone, but not...
