Cherokee 140/180 and Cherokee 180 high altitude performance?

Not alot of experience in 180 Cherokee but assume the 140/180 would have a higher service ceiling due to less weight and same wing. No problem climbing to get tailwind, but quite a speed penalty with Hershey bar wing at altitude. 180 Comanches and Mooney 180 did better maintaining their speed at...

    Front Range flying

Your plane will be fine, but will need to adjust your useful load, time of day flying, amount of fuel for cross- countries. Regardless of the plane, or horsepower, these adjustments need to be made. I flew a 180hp Comanche out of a 3300 dirt strip @ 7200 ft(E32) safely. I just about bought the...

    Front Range flying

Living on the east side of the Rockies in NM, my IFR flying is mostly in mild IFR weather, when weather is bad here(ie ice, TS), it’s VFR or don’t go. Even in relative bad weather, VFR is the best option.

    downsizing to an RV 7A

I agree with the above comments regarding a seat that cannot be repositioned during flight, dealing with the heat in the summer, room to enjoy a snack or coffee or just catching a nap during long cross countries. I enjoyed my RV6 for flights up to a couple hours, but anything longer was a...

Opinions on this PA30 Twin Comanche

Too many questions for the price. Why top and not major, how long since top, 22 hrs not enough time to be sure you got a good engine(has it been flown much in past year to break in engine) my guess is it was repaired but then sat a lot since repai.

PA-28 fatal crash near KCNY Moab, UT 10/1/2023

if Moab is surrounded by higher terrain, which it is, there is likely a downdraft after takeoff if one is down wind from the obstacle, which one is if taking off against the wind. True either taking off to sw or ne.

Woman hit by landing airplane. Fatal

Here is a case where I doubt the facts will matter much. The pilot, airport owner, and her employer will be writing checks regardless the facts. Deepest pockets will at the most, just guessing.

What color vision test does your AME use?

Get a demonstrated waiver and forget about it. Should be easily obtained if the type of color vision test makes a difference.

KTCC (Tucumcari) to KABQ (Albuquerque) Routing Help

Early morning then decide where the 18,000 winds are coming from. If from the west, stay out of the pass(I-40) if from the south west, consider going south route, if from the northwest, consider going north. If winds over 20 kts, might pick another day. Fighting a significant headwinds on the...

FAA To Approve Use Of 91UL Fuel In Two-Thirds Of Piston Fleet

If I had a small county airport that was able to sell the 91UL at a discount, I think I would be quite busy with with cross country and nearby local pilots looking to save a buck. Not every small airport needs to carry the same fuel. I fly 40 miles to buy cheaper fuel and a place to exercise my...

    Age ???

Not 85, only 76, but when I lose my motivation, stop enjoying my plane, stop flying 75 hrs/yr, I will quit. I’m sure there will be times I might regret it, but it will be the right decision for me, regret’s or not. I don’t want to be the guy who hangs on too long, but the guy who has many fond...

What is cheaper, a new airplane or an old one?

I could afford a new plane when I was young, paying a lot of taxes, and depreciating the plane as a business expense. When I retired and lost the depreciation, I decide used was ,ore economical.

    Cross country weather planning

I like it. Easy to compare different time periods, and allows one to focus in on the areas that might be a special problem, especially at the last minute.

    How is the Piper Comanche?

180hp has more range, less moving parts(valves, cylinders, etc), more efficiency, cooler temps, more likely to reach TBO. I would not make the conversion, but I would consider a 180 if I did not need the speed or load hauling ability. According to the book, 180 had a less take off distance(50 ft...

    How is the Piper Comanche?

Yes and probably. I know of 180 to 250, don’t see a problem going the other way for the early Comanches, probably not for the 63’s and later. The 180 was a very nice, efficient, well balanced plane. When they put the 250 in it became nose heavy, but a faster, more of a hauler.

    How is the Piper Comanche?

Owned a 180, 250, pa30. Plenty of used parts, structure was rust proof coated at factory, good cabin size, strong gear if maintained correctly, I’ve always preferred lycoming, easy access to engine, plenty of gas, no spar ad’s I’m aware. I’ve also owned a 210, 35J, 182RG. Would always choose...

    Humphrey 30-2 Vision Test “Borderline”

Depends upon the optic nerve and retinal exam, history, etc. Looks like a nasal step suggesting low tension glaucoma as a possibility. The visual fields usually lag the optic nerve damage significantly.
