Decomissioned VORs - why are they still on the charts?

Not really sure why they are still on the charts, other than perhaps they are still used as GPS waypoints? The Nottingham (OTT) VOR has been out of service for several years, but is still depicted on the charts. EDIT: Looks like it's back in service, but so many radials are unusable, I don't...

Six PWA 4000's "running" on one plane.

Yes it does. This has been a discussion in the B-52 community since I was turning wrenches on them (almost 15yrs ago, now). Among other several reasons/excuses, we were told there were so many surplus TF-33s from the retirement of the C-141, that even the efficiency of a newer modern engine...

    Wanna Buy a C-54?

Anyone else think its funny the ad says to call for price, then goes on to specify "no calls please"?

Six PWA 4000's "running" on one plane.

    The Stratolaunch uses PW4056, not JT9D's. The JT9 hasn't been seen on a 74 since the classic (-100, -200, -300) days. PW4056's are pretty popular on -400's, along with GE's CF-6.

Six PWA 4000's "running" on one plane.

FWIW, the BUFF has been re-engined once. Started with J57's, now sporting TF-33's. H models (only ones left in the fleet) still have the water tank left over from the turbojet days.

    Game of Thrones

If you are going to use a virtual Nanny to watch, might as well skip ahead to Season 3 or 4, or not watch at all. Some of the scenes are gratuitous, but others actually feed the plot. Yes, it's a bit risqué at times, but honestly, are you going to burst into flames by seeing it on tv? We all...

Flight Chops joins the Cessnas to Oshkosh!

Nate, I think you are correct, this was 2016. The weather certainly threw a wrench in their plans, but there also seemed to be a fair amount of other issues that fed the disarray of the gaggle. Hopefully the lessons learned last year were put to good use this year!

Flight Dispatcher - Without the coursework

Although I'm not a dispatcher, I've done a fair amount of research pondering entering the field, so here's the cliff notes version of what I know: The dispatcher plans flight route and required fuel load and inputs it into the system, and subsequently releases the flight for departure. The...

This is awesome! I earned my PPL in the Anchorage Bowl in 2008, learning to fly with backdrops like this. Makes me want to go back! Thanks for posting this.

Flight Dispatcher - Without the coursework

Yes, there is a practical as well. It essentially entails dispatching a simulated flight given a set of parameters from the examiner. I'm of the understanding the Dispatcher Certificate is challenging to obtain, but worthwhile if that's the specific job path you want to follow. There are...

Plane kills 2 on the ground in emergency landing.

Or instead of more tech, pilots dedicate time/funds to advancing training and skills. Tech is a good SA builder, but if stick, rudder, and ADM skills are lacking, nothing will help.

Mighty 8th Air Force Museum and KSAV

Been into SAV several times over the years in the work airplane (G-III/V) and Sheltair has always treated us well. Most of the time fees were waived due to gov't contract/fuel purchase, but nonetheless, the inside and ramp staff were always super nice and helpful.

    Look Attractive?

I saw this as well. In the current stage of my life, both personally and professionally, I'd have to pass and keep doing what I'm doing. On the other hand, if I were in his position and his age, I'd take it in a heartbeat. Good flying in a cool environment in a pretty neat airplane.

    Always, Always, Always, Be Ready!

As said earlier in the thread, a Vx climb will keep you closer to the airfield environment, whereas a Vy climb will get you higher faster, but at the expense of getting farther away from the sanctuary of the runway. By climbing at Vx, as was noted is used for obstacle clearance, I treat 700'...

Yes, the briefings are recorded. No, you can't use the excuse "he told me I could". It's PIC responsibility to familiarize yourself with all aspects of the flight, to include reading the NOTAMS/TFRs for your route. If there is a discrepancy between the written text and what the briefer tells...
