J-3 Cub - Chicago shoreline to Oshkosh - missing Meigs

I was leading a flight of three J-3 Cubs flying to Oshkosh. Because the weather was good, we decided to take the quick and smooth route around Chicago from Ohio. A slight headwind did slow us down a bit. The Meigs part of the flight starts at 6 min into video. We were over water for some 50 plus...

    Cubs2Oshkosh for the 75th

I need to clear this work area between the hangers to get to the grass runway. The paved runway is also open. I could almost take off north on the taxiway that is usable in front of the hangers. But, some of the workers might die of fright.

    Cubs2Oshkosh for the 75th

If it isn’t the weather, it‘s always something that makes it a little bit harder to fly when I desire. The work crew has cautioned me that there is a 4 inch drop to the gravel base. I told them I sometimes drop the Cub onto the runway from a greater height. If they start to lay asphalt...

    Osh Noob Questions

I have been told that a slow plane approach has been discussed for years at Oshkosh. I had hoped that the 75th anniversary of the J-3 Piper Cub would spur the EAA/FAA into making it a reality. As that didn't happen, I can only caution pilots as to the larger numbers of very slow planes this...

flying the pattern (gopro HD 2 video)

As I mounted the GoPro in a location where I could not see the very small control LCD screen, the remote enabled me to verify my camera settings and easily turn it off and on (start & stop). http://vimeo.com/44187735

I also like to use the Hero2. Will try their new Wi-Fi PacPac with the camera on my next flight. http://vimeo.com/42905642

    Cameras?

I believe that the use of a GoPro Hero2 would be helpful to critique one’s own flight and or that of a student when flying solo. Take a look at my landing as an example. http://vimeo.com/42905642

The Notam for AirVenture 2012 is now on theAirVenture site http://www.airventure.org/flying/2012_notam.pdf One of the minor changes from last year is to present both knots and MPH on one chart so that everyone knows 90 knots is equal to 104 MPH. Again, please note that J-3 Cubs will be using...

Heads-up > there could be twenty-five B-25s on the field this April

It was the thrill of a lifetime to be in the pattern and hear “Zero on downwind for two zero Grimes ”. The “Last Samurai” is the world’s last remaining airworthy A6-M2 Zero. The Zero and a few other aircraft in the Texas Flying Legends collection are here.

Heads-up > there could be twenty-five B-25s on the field this April

How many of you have been in the air with a Jap Zero and lived to tell about it? Today, my wingman Stan and I forced a Zero to land. Of course, it was an unfair matchup with two J-3 Cubs against only one Zero. That’s our story and were sticking to it!
