    Value of 2 VORs

I only use an NDB and a whiskey compass. ANDS NOSE.

    Value of 2 VORs

KVNY (Van Nuys) does not have any GPS approach and does have two ILS approaches. There are several others, including some popular GA destinations, but I can't think of off the top of my head.

    RAM iPad mount

Nope. Dental floss and elbow grease gets it off but not my idea of a fun afternoon.

    Value of 2 VORs

In the past the second VOR served as a backup to the first. Now the first VOR is a backup to GPS, so I don't see a need for a GPS and two VORs anymore than the need for 3 VORs before GPS. I do think one VLOC is very important as there are still a few places w/ an ILS and no LPV approach. Also...

    RAM iPad mount

Yes, this was pointed out above. I’ll edit the post.

    RAM iPad mount

Left radio stack is GFC600, GTN750, GTR225, right stack is nothing. Some people put a second GTN750 but it’s less capable in many ways and way more expensive than an iPad. Garmin Pilot will show EIS graphs and ADS-B, and I can transfer flight plans, scribble clearances, and file from it. It also...

    RAM iPad mount

It’s alumin... ah crap. Sheesh, brain on vacation.

    RAM iPad mount

I am looking for a solution to mount an iPad on the bare co-pilot site, and would prefer not to drill holes in case we put actual instruments there. 3M VHB tape is one option, but I came across the below product that RAM just released. It's a magnetic mount. The obvious concern is the magnetic...

Meaning of green arc for RPM and MP

In our plane the bottom of the green arc is the minimum power at which the turbochargers will supply adequate pressurization air. This is probably a fictitious number because however well it was sealed at the factory, it's not that now. Maybe they built in a buffer.

    Indicated vs actual altitude

I wasn't clear on my context- I agree altitude on a non-WAAS GPS is not that accurate as it relates to the original question. I didn't realize that apart from approaches, WAAS navigators are not actually required correct to MSL. I had read somewhere that all save the early ones do anyways...

    Indicated vs actual altitude

WAAS GPS must be within 25 feet 95% of the time. According to Garmin it is more typically less than 3 meters (~ 10 feet). If you live near a center facility presumably it would be even more accurate as I believe this is where WAAS antennas usually are. Since this is within the height of the...

    Portable XM radio solutions

They actually made a portable unit you can probably still find on eBay. We have a GDL because the built in XM 69A was the same cost as a compact car.

    Portable XM radio solutions

I use the GDL 51. You can get an internet only subscription, use the iPhone app, and download some shows and listen offline (or in the air). I personally don't like the audio quality for music, but it's live, so for sports, news, etc. it's the only option.

    Are Dual NAV's necessary anymore

Well yes, obviously you don’t need any navigation receiver for VFR flight. Localizer and glide slope receivers are not the same as VOR receivers, other than the localizer and VOR receiver share an antenna and are contained in the same box. You do not need to do a VOR check to use an ILS under...

    Are Dual NAV's necessary anymore

You only need to check them if you need to use them on a flight (as opposed to using the receiver only for an emergency). Also, in practice I suppose it’s more accurate (and probably safer) to use a GPS to check your VOR, if not legal. I’m sure someone can poke holes in that but in general I’d...

Austin Straubel for a Packer game

I have flown in there as a passenger and will be there for the Vikings game this weekend. There is a pretty long line of planes when the game is over as you'd expect. Fun experience.

Are G1000 and G430W data cards the same??

They are very different. The GNS series uses what is basically a raw NAND chip in box with a pinout, the G1000 uses an SD card. The WAAS cards for the 430W/530W are different also as compared to the 430, although the form factor is the same (higher capacity).

    Are Dual NAV's necessary anymore

Not to drift the thread too far, but I wonder if those were approved based on looser legacy criteria for ILS and they are left in for practical reasons as they can't get an LPV approved?

    Are Dual NAV's necessary anymore

No RNAV approaches but ILSs in 2019, I would never have guessed. I wonder what the story is there, those are not remote airports.

    Are Dual NAV's necessary anymore

We elected to just put in one nav and we have a battery powered handheld navcom (with glideslope) as an extra backup, although I doubt we'll ever need it. We did test it and it seems to work decently well on an approach although it is tricky if single pilot. This is more redundancy than the...
