Watching the Blue Angels is Unhealthy

They just need to covert to training aircraft. Go to T-45s or better yet, T-6s. We’ll save tax $ and the reduction in noise, Co2, and PM2.5 will add years to our lives. I bet the T-6 can do a mean sneak up pass!

    I hate this FAR

“Avoid the flow” isn’t very clear either. Most assume helicopters are required to do right traffic to avoid the flow. Doesn’t say in the FARs to do that. Some places have a smaller / lower helicopter pattern with left traffic within the fixedwing pattern. Either way, left, right or straight in...

    Osprey crash in Japan

I know. That’s why if a 10-15 minute warm up is true, any speed advantage over a traditional helicopter is severely cut into. I did “med chase” in Afghanistan. One time I was taxiing in only 5 minutes from the call, and the MEDEVAC HH-60 that we were chasing was already airborne. They were on...

    Osprey crash in Japan

With or without fuzz burn, that many chips in that short period of time is not a good sign. Surprised if it doesn’t have a delay to put the light on. Think we had a 30 sec delay for fuzz burn to do its thing. After that, the chip is still there, the light comes on and it’s “land as soon as possible.”

Watching the Blue Angels is Unhealthy

The comments on the Article in the Times website are far more diverse than POA. Obviously the majority of this group supports the Blues. People in Seattle seemed to be split 50/50.

    Anyone Fly RC Planes?

I used to fly RC but with all the increased regs in recent years, I’ve gotten out of the hobby. I never bought any of the expensive Futaba stuff. Always used cheap Chinese 72 hz - 2.4 G stuff. They used to be unreliable but the stuff today is pretty solid.

Watching the Blue Angels is Unhealthy

The link was posted to get a discussion going. Are the health risks associated with attending an air show significant as the author states? While I don’t disagree with the author’s facts, his assessment of “significant” exaggerated. Hearing loss isn’t going to occur above 85 dbs over a weekend...

Masters of the Air--coming to Apple TV

Loaned out the Blu-ray’s to my parents recently. They loved it. My dad thought the flying scenes were real. “How did they get all those aircraft for the flying scenes.” :)

    AirVenture craziness - **** show

Well I don’t care for Dan but he is right, on the ATC procedures side, both SNF and OSH are a **** show. Every time I’ve flown into both events I witnessed ATC operational errors and PDs. My brother and I just talked about this a couple days ago. He used to work with a “pink shirt” supervisor...

Is it true with Magic Carpet that it’s so accurate that they had to modify the software so it wouldn’t land at the exact point every time? Heard a rumor that the hook impacts were so precise it was actually rubbing a hole in the deck. Heard some of these retired fighter pilots on YT who...

While this isn't a violation of 91.119, isn't it getting a bit too close to 91.13?

Yep. Another thing I didn’t know was he wanted Joe Engle and not Schmitt. Even though he worked out (excellent LM pilot) and they got along fine, he wanted another test pilot with him on the surface.

While this isn't a violation of 91.119, isn't it getting a bit too close to 91.13?

The problem with water and that low of altitude, is height / depth perception illusion. You can plow it into the water in a split second if you’re not keeping up your scan. Reminds me of a story in Gene Cernan’s book. One day he grabbed one of NASA’s H-13s and took it out for a joy ride along...

How many here have read these books. See attached poll?

I always called the Army’s Fundamentals of Flight “aerodynamics for dummies.” Not much on equations, lots of pictures. Black and white though. Needs to be color. If you have ADHD or failed high school Algebra, there’s a place for you in Army Aviation. ;)

That’s actually not too bad. Outside of Reynolds Number, most of that stuff I can understand. Now this, yeah I’d fail out of this course in a heartbeat. http://practicalaero.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/USNTPS_FTM_107.pdf

I’ve read Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators cover to cover. Didn’t understand a lick of it.

T-37s must have been like ground hog day. Mon-Fri flying every day. One of the reasons why I didn’t go back to Rucker as a civilian IP is, I’d go insane teaching the same thing every day. I could vary it with days, nights, instruments, tactics, etc but it would still be monotonous work.

They always told us you all had a self contained “Hornet Approach” mode as well. Basically sounded like auto throttles and followed a 3 degree glide path or something. I remember with Hornets, if you nailed the “begin descent” call on the PAR, they would stick on glide path like they were on...
