    Autos: A family hauler

It's an option. Larger vehicles at peak times (when we tend to travel -- holidays, summer, etc) are somewhat expensive -- my last Chevy Tahoe rental was $1200 for a week and one day -- so 4x a year for 2-3 weeks at a time would be a punt at best, more likely to push me off worse (fully loaded...

Snow handling? I'm talking Hanover snow, not Northern NJ (present storm excluded). That's my biggest concern, to date, with minivans. Precision strike! Cheers, -Andrew

    Autos: A family hauler

It's not a problem any more (my sister has a '07). Ours, an '03, is the last year off the line with the problem. We had the head gaskets done at 55k, and the problem reappeared 30k later. Now we do the fairy dust once a quarter or so. It's annoying, but not a deal breaker. Cheers, -Andrew

    Autos: A family hauler

I've looked at the roof-tops (I think I mentioned them in my earlier post), and they are indeed a viable option. It's about multi-year planning. We (hope) to have our second child within 3 years of our first child. So, within 3.5 years, we hope to be: Two 30 somethings 1 3 year old 1...

    Autos: A family hauler

It has. We've already taken the new Outback for a spin. You can clear most curbs with the new Outback. RE: The CRV comment, the CRV offers us little in terms of increased cabin volume, which is what this game is about. One other option is to buy another Outback and leave a Pack-and-Play...

    Autos: A family hauler

Jessie and I are in the market for a new (to us) car. We're about to have a baby (4 months away, aiee). This car will be a) Jessie's daily driver (all errands) and b) our long distance hauler. We make 4+ trips a year to Boston / Maine; minimum one-way distance is 500 miles. The trips...

    What to do in Boston?

It's the TD Garden now. I am so sick of them changing names. Late to the thread, as usual, but there are so many things to see and do in Boston. My personal choice, if pressed for time, is a walk up the waterfront to the North End, dinner at Maurizio's, and a cannoli from Modern' Pastry...

One of the few I can claim! Not with a Q -- not that I can think of. But I can claim OQU and UUU, both in RI. Cheers, -Andrew

    TCM sold to Chinese Company

I was wrong to correct steingar's quote -- the profits will not really accrue to shareholders. They will accrue to a Chinese state-owned firm.

    What to do with deadfall...

How far are you from Urbanna, VA? I have a friend with an a) sawmill and b) artisan wood shop. Cheers, -Andrew

    What to do with deadfall...

Chip, I forget where you are exactly in this state, but if you're within an hour of Covington, I imagine you could find a pulp wood buyer who is interested. Cheers, -Andrew

Mass. Marine Trying To Get Home For Cancer Treatment

IIRC, the military hospitals in San Antonio see dependents. At least that is my recollection (a friend works there). I've heard varying reports of VA's. Boston VA? Sucks. Augusta, ME VA? Great. Richmond VA? Great. I think the facility has a lot to do with it. But I'm not a vet, and...

My Dog is Sick... I think

Gotcha. In the future, if it's your call -- consider Tufts or Angell. Tufts is world-class and really great people, although you'll pay for the quality of care. My sister works in infectious diseases there. Cheers, -Andrew

My Dog is Sick... I think

Ted, What emergency clinic did you go to? Next time, I would suggest you go to Tufts Veterinary School in Grafton. An outstanding environment, one of the best. You can, alternatively, head to MSCPA Angell in Boston, just off of the Jamaica Way. Cheers, -Andrew

Airline add-on fees vs 7.5% "head tax"

Continental statist paternalism at work. It's cultural; it's an expectation that the crown/state will provide certain things for you, in exchange for certain things from you (tax, lower wages). Cheers, -Andrew someone's going to slam me for this

Airline add-on fees vs 7.5% "head tax"

While there may be fare differences from time to time, I doubt you can ascribe those differences to a fee versus no fee structure. The fee system is still relatively new, and is largely a response to LCC competition and increasing legacy costs. In fact, on the routes I fly domestically, SWA...

Mass. Marine Trying To Get Home For Cancer Treatment

Dana Farber is, in fact, one heck of a treatment center, coupled with facilities at BI, Brigham, and MGH. IIRC, air ambulance offers the ability to put the pt in a more comfortable stretcher with appropriate monitoring, plus support staff/systems. Cheers, -Andrew
