ADS-B Changes for LSA and Experimental!

I've been working on a Field Approval to add ADSB-Out to my motor glider. The FA will be based on a STC using the Trigg Mode S transponder and the FreeFlight GPS. I will be using the Dynon variant of the Trigg transponder thus the following discussion over on the Dynon forum-...

    Any motorglider pilots out there?

I've got over a hundred hours in a Pipistrel Sinus and loved that plane. Climb at VNe, Cruise at VNe and Descend at VNe (120 Kts true) all getting over 40 mpg as the crow flies. Shut off the Rotax and it does ok as a glider. The 50 ft wing span is a bit of a pain but then you have that with...

This is why you don't rush to embrace new tech (another ADS-B thread)

The antenna to antenna verification points being addressed by a certified shop installing support equipment for a portable solution is an interesting twist on the topic. I know the Experimental crowd is coming to grips with getting FAA approval for installations of paired TSO'd equipment as I...

8 Secrets that Your Flight Instructor Doesn't Want You to Know

The stall stuff is funny. I get all types in the front of my plane. I've literally had to block the stick from moving side to side doing falling leaf with some pilots because they insist on using the ailerons to catch the falling wing. Once they find the stick no longer moves left or right...

8 Secrets that Your Flight Instructor Doesn't Want You to Know

and another thing.... A lot of CFIs are in it for you to pay for their hours so they can go do something else. I do not say this to offend anyone, especially CFIs. Its just a common practice for young pilots to use the CFI to build hours towards an ATP. They are not teachers and normally...

    Offering strangers rides

Last victim was just a few weeks ago. An incredibly friendly Irish lady introduced to me by a pilot friend :)

    Spin training

The CFIs on my field make my life easy by letting me sneak in and out when I need to. I try to thank them with a standing offer to take the front seat whenever they like (MX2). It amazes me that only about a third of them can count their way through a three turn spin. Counting helps me...

    Avionics Guys - ADS-B question

I just checked out the link posted above and found this iterating tidbit. "Finally, the report recommends a determination of whether cost savings can be realized for operators if the agency delays payment by users for subscription fees to ADS-B services in locations where users are ADS-B...

FAA 2020 Compliant ADSB-Out and Experimentals

Started a thread on Dynon's forum as well :) But, the issue is not limited to Dynon. The FAA will need to define "compliance" for experimental aircraft.

FAA 2020 Compliant ADSB-Out and Experimentals

It is my understanding that radios and transponders in experimental aircraft have to have or meet TSO. I could very well be wrong here but that is what I have been led to believe. Put differently, the Mode C ring requires TSO'd equipment to comply.

FAA 2020 Compliant ADSB-Out and Experimentals

Yes, those two responses are obvious but the question is- Do experimental aircraft have to do something similar to a Field Approval based on an existing STC? There is no such thing as a Field Approval for experimental aircraft so, if something like a Field Approval is needed, what is that...

FAA 2020 Compliant ADSB-Out and Experimentals

I'm navigating the waters of both certified and experimental aircraft and ADSB-Out. By 2020 we are all supposed to have out compliant equipment installed. For certified aircraft, the FAA started by saying you could only do it through STC but relaxed that to allow Field Approval based on an...

    Another ADS-B Question

Mr. Cantwell of the FAA recently testified in front of a Senate committee that (1) the mandate will not slip, (2) there are 140K aircraft that need ADSB-Out, (3) 100 per day need to be done to make the deadline and only 100 per month are being done. He went on to say the FAA is doing its part...

    Another ADS-B Question

I thought the whole idea of NextGen was to move away from radar surveillance all to together. Anyone know what the expected accuracy is of the required TSO'd WAAS GPS source for the average GA aircraft? John, thanks for the email to check Out performance. It does not look like there is...

John, Can you elaborate on the FAA ADSB Compliance Testing? How and where is this done/arranged?

    Another ADS-B Question

colorado just summed up the average GA thought process (which is valid) thus pointing out the likelihood that NextGen will not roll out on time. It is a shame as it is a good system with its primary flaw being lack of management/leadership.

    Another ADS-B Question

I fly daily in S. Florida and traffic is always up. I see what Palm Beach sees as well as Center. I can understand if the system is not fully functional everywhere as the mandate is still five years away. And yes, judging by the FAA's latest Senate testimony, there is no way to get all...

    Another ADS-B Question

I've used Garmin equipment as far back as the late 90s and there is absolutely nothing new about Garmin competing on everything but capability. They are not interested in a level playing field and I do not believe they should have a seat at the table when discussing what is in the public's best...

    Another ADS-B Question

So Michael Whitaker testifies in front of a Senate sub committee that the FAA is doing its part and that industry needs to step up and do its part to fulfill the mandate. He went on to say that the deadline will not move and then proceeded to say that there are 140,000 N registered aircraft...
